The following are descriptions of each Summer BUILD youth site.
Read more about each program, the work hours, and the number of
tutors that work at each site, and figure out which is best for you.
Some work start/end times might change. Also, it may be possible
to work at two sites if the hours do not overlap.
Washington Elementary
This site includes sports, arts & crafts, reading, time for literacy activities, & mini field trips. Lunch
and snacks are provided. BUILD Tutors from UC-Berkeley will lead reading and literacy activities
for 1.5 hours a day Monday-Thursday. Priority will be given to Berkeley residents and Berkeley
students attending summer school. Space is limited so register now!
Start/End Dates: June 22-July 30
Work Hours: M-F, 1:10-2:10pm
Location: 2300 MLK Jr. Way

Malcolm X Elementary
This site includes sports, arts & crafts, reading, time for literacy activities, & mini field trips. Lunch

James Kenney Recreation Center Explorers Camp
Explorers Camp provides a weekly program of reading, physical activities, arts & crafts, and field
trips. BUILD tutors from UC-Berkeley work with youth for 1.5 hours a day on reading, story-telling,
and group literacy activities to help youth maintain their literacy skills over summer.
Start/End Dates: June 15 - Aug 7
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, noon-3pm
Location: 1720 8th St.
Ages: 5-12 years old

Frances Albrier Recreation Center Discovery Camp
Discovery Camp provides a weekly program of games, creative writing, physical activities, and
arts & crafts. BUILD tutors from UC-Berkeley work with youth for 1.5 hours a day, 3 days a week
on reading and group literacy activities to help youth maintain their literacy skills over summer.
Start/End Dates: June 15 – August 7
Work Hours: Mon, Wed, and Fri, 10am-noon
Location: 2800 Park St.
Ages: 5-12 years old

Berkeley Youth Alternatives (BYA) Summer Jam
Summer Jam encourages children to discover individual and unique talents through swimming,
karate, tap dance, jazz dance, hip-hop, music, nutrition education, and much more. BUILD tutors
lead story-telling and group literacy activities for 1.5 hours/day.
Start/End Dates: June 22-August 14
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30-11am

Bahia School Age Program
Bahia is a bilingual (Spanish - English) program that provides cultural, linguistic and
recreational activities to school age children ages 5-10 years old. Activities are focused on
developing the whole child: physical, emotional, social, cognitive and creativity.
Start/End Dates: June 15 – September 1
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 12:45-2pm

Camp Live Act at Live Oak Community Center
Camp Live Act will include a variety of activities such as making science displays, hiking, and
swimming, and several field trips. All participants must bring their own lunch. BUILD Tutors from
UC-Berkeley will lead reading and literacy activities for an hour 3 days a week.
Start/End Dates: June 15 - August 7
Work Hours: Mon, Wed, and Friday, 9:30am-11:30am
Location: 1301 Shattuck Ave.

South Berkeley YMCA Learning Academy
The Summertime Learning Academy is an innovative program where students in grades 1-8
explore hands on science, math, geography, and language arts in the morning hours, and engage
in activities of drama, crafts, computers, organized sports, parks and cultural field trips in the
afternoons. BUILD tutors will support literacy and math academic enrichment (in a fun
environment) during the morning. Afternoon tutors will help the students with creative, innovative
projects with a special emphasis on health and nutrition.
Start/End Days: June 16-July 31; All tutors must also attend orientations on Sat & Sun,
June 6 & 7, from 10:30-3:30pm AND on Mon, June 15 from 9am-3pm

Ages: grades 1 – 8

RISE (Responsibility, Integrity, Strength and Empowerment)
RISE aids low income 8th graders in the transition from middle to high school, and to develop and
encourage reading and the skills needed to write a three-part essay. We also focus on Math and
Health. RISE believes in building strong bonds with students and their families. Our Summer
Bridge program begins with one week in the Marin Headlands and 4 weeks at Berkeley High.
Start/End Dates: July 6-July 31 at Berkeley High; camp in Marin Headlands week of June
22 (there may be optional hours this week)

YAP Fun Camp (MLK Youth Services Center)
Camp will include a variety of activities including sports, crafts, and games, and lunch is provided.

story-telling, and group literacy activities to help youth maintain their literacy skills over summer.
