Youth Program Intern Program
Ethnic Studies 97/197, 2-3 units Sponsors: Pacific Center, Berkeley & UCB, Gender Equity Resource Center
Pacific Center’s youth program has provided support and leadership development for LGBTQ youth in the East Bay for over ten years. Pacific Center offers a free drop-in safe space for youth every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon from 4-6 PM. On average, 10-20 youth participate at each session. This year, we have had a number of special events such as a multi-media performance by a gender-queer performance artist, and drama therapy groups. We also provide access to free HIV testing and prevention. The core project in our youth program is our Speaker’s Bureau. We educate and train youth to go into local middle and high schools in the East Bay where they conduct anti-homophobia workshops. We are currently averaging 2 panels/workshops a month, a number which dramatically rises in the spring every year. In 2008, we reached over 800 students, teachers and service providers through our Speaker’s Bureau, and over 95% of participants said they learned something new about the issues faced by LGBT youth through the presentation and that they would like for us to return. In support of our Speakers’ Bureau, we conduct 2-day intensive trainings twice a year. The Youth Program at Pacific Center has a dedicated staff person who oversees the program and acts as a liaison to schools and funders of the program. Historically, the program has also utilized two interns. This Spring, we seek two new interns Qualifications 1. Must be a currently registered student at UC Berkeley 2.
