CAL QUEER AND ASIAN (CAL Q&A) 400 Eshleman Hall Berkeley, CA 94720 1st Annual Queer and Asian Conference "Story-ing the Silence: Filling the Pages" Saturday, May 3, 2008 Check-in: begins 9:00am, conference begins 10:00am Contact: Q&A Conference Planning Committee Categorically speaking, where do you fit? Which bubble do you circle? Which box do you scratch down a checkmark in? Mark one. Only one. Prioritize. The box confines. The box omits. The box silences. As nearly half a century of progress, activism, and change have demonstrated that "Asian" is obsolete-we are not one people, but many; we've garnered more boxes to choose from. But it is still a box. The box confines. The box omits. The box silences. We've reached an age of intersections. The
"Asian" collides with the "Queer." Decide. Are you the L, G, B, T, I, Q, Q, or A? And if you mark a Q, what Q is it? In this age of intersections, the boxes multiply. The silences multiply. In the end, what story does the box tell? Behind every box there's a story. What is yours? What is ours? Berkeley's 1st Queer and Asian Conference will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008. The theme is Story-ing the Silence: Filling the Pages. This year's conference is organized by the University of California, Berkeley's student group Cal Q & A (Cal Queer & Asian). As we put a story to the silence, we hope this will be a day for community building and networking; a place to explore the intersections of our identity, and share our experiences, our stories as individuals; our stories as community. Together, let's break through the compounded silences of Queer and Asian. Also, the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) proudly presents an intercollegiate after-party to UC Berkeley's 2008 Queer and Asian (Q+A) Conference on the evening of Saturday, May 3. Hip Hop / Top 40s music, dance floor, refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Further promotional details will be distributed prior to the conference. To be added to the guestlist for FREE admission to the party, please send your guestlist with first, last names and email to antony@gapa.org with the subject line: "GAPA College Night." Please also bring your college id to ensure free admission. We hope to see you there! Register online at http://qacon08.wordpress.com/. *********************************************************** 7. Public Health 198: The Multicultural Health Awareness Peer
The Multicultural Health Awareness Peer Program (MAPP) is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2008 semester. MAPP is a theatrebased health education course here at UC Berkeley. Students create original performances that explore health issues from multicultural perspectives. MAPP uses Forum Theatre, an approach to performance that asks the audience to become active participants. The audience determines the outcome of the performance and in the process explores the choices that can be made in a given situation. For more information and applications, visit the website: MAPP is currently performing two scenes this semester and will have a scene on-line this summer. Please check back for updates and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

To the Campus Community: Help us build on the unprecedented success of the past three years by joining the Cal AIDS Walk Team, UC Berkeley team for the 22nd Annual San Francisco AIDS Walk on Sunday, July 20, 2008. All students, faculty, staff, alumni and Cal friends are encouraged to participate. As one of the top 20 fundraising teams, UC Berkeley has qualified as a Gold Team for the past two years. We hope to make this our third Gold Team year. Last year over $4.4 million was raised by the San Francisco AIDS Walk -- and over $32,000 of that was raised by the Cal team of 300 strong! The San Francisco AIDS Walk is also a great opportunity to get out and meet people who are motivated and passionate about a world without AIDS. Money raised will go to support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and other Bay Area AIDS service organizations. You can show your support by registering as a walker, by sponsoring a team member, by volunteering, or by making a donation in our team name: University of California Berkeley (team #0087). Registered Cal team walkers will also receive a special team t-shirt, breakfast and lunch at the event. A minimum contribution is not required for participation. You can register as a walker and fundraise even if you cannot attend the event or are unable to walk all or part of the course. The 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) walk, which begins in Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, at 10:30 a.m., takes about two to three hours to complete. There is an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m. and a post-walk concert with a lineup of celebrities at 12:30 p.m. Interested walkers can find out information and register for this walk in one of three ways: -- Register on-line at http://www.aidswalk.net/sanfran (Choose Teams/2007 Registered Teams/ University of California, Berkeley -- Register by phone at (415) 615-9255. -- Register by mail: Pick-up a registration card at one of many waiting rooms and lobbies across campus (look for the AIDS Walk display stands available in May).
