                                                                  The Galaxy’s Gamma-Ray Glow
                       Visible light makes up only a small part of the full spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. When        astronomers use antennae or satellite-borne telescopes to look at the universe at those other wave-
                       lengths, they unmask strange landscapes and physical processes that remain concealed from               optical telescopes. A team of researchers led by ROLAND DIEHL at the MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE                                                                                                                                                                                                               FOR

                       EXTRATERRESTRIAL PHYSICS                 in Garching focuses on gamma-ray light, which has given them   deep insights into the Milky Way – and even resorts to radioactivity as a source of these gamma rays.
