Smoking in public should be banned
In the many countries, smoking becomes the common thing for the people.
They always smoke without concern about the surroundings. Some people
thought smoking can liberate their tension and can relax their mind. Whereas,
smoking is more than a habit will make an addiction. The bad effect of smoking
not only influence on himself, but also very influence on the health of people
who are around because tobacco smoke is a powerful trigger of asthma
symptoms. That is why smoking should be banned in public places.
Usually, smoker are not allowed to smoke in restaurant, malls, hospitals,
and also in community center, because this places have lots of people, including
children. Think about it, there is a smoker who was smoking in those place, then
the air environment was mixed with cigarette smoke and what will happen to
these passive smokers. Cigarette smoke can be the main factor in causing many
health problems. Imagine sitting in a restaurant unable to enjoy a meal due to
the cloud of smoke coming from a neighbor’s table.
The fact that there was not a designated area for smokers has put the
smoker and the non-smoker in an uncomfortable situation. Smoking should be
banned in public places because non-smokers have a right to clean air, and
because second hand smoke is more dangerous than actually smoking a cigarette.
However, smoking should not be banned in public places because it is the
smoker’s choice to smoke just as it is the non-smokers choice not to smoke.
President Clinton is quoted saying that “We’ve got to do more to protect people
in public places and clean up the air that all of us share” (Rovner 571). For non-
smokers, inhaling someone else cigarette smoke can be very aggravating. The
other effect, cigarette smoke will disrupt our lungs and also can reduce oxygen
in our blood. Smoking is not only damage the heart and lungs. They are a lot of
smoking in middle age appears to increase the risk of dementia or Alzheimer's in
old age. Moreover, child, chronically-ill and old people are the most vulnerable to
it (Archives of Internal Medicine, 2010).
It just take a little longer for non-smokers who are exposed to develop
the same ailments, including chronic throat and mouth irritation, emphysema and
other lung problems as the addicted smoker. Another reason smoking should be
banned in all public spaces is that it is unpleasant to non-smokers. Where it is
permitted in restaurants, bars, casinos, theaters, transportation and other
places, it is simply that the inconsiderate smoker is imposing his/her addiction
to the discomfort of others. If those persons must indulge in smoking, they
should do it in designated indoor and outdoor areas where it will not annoy
and/or sicken others.
In addtion, Tobacco smoke raises a passive smoker risk of developing lung
cancer by at least 50 percent (Health Article Magazine 65). If the nation would
ban together as a whole, society could eliminate public smoking completely. Is
that fair in a free nation If public places would compromise and designate
certain areas for smoking and non-smoking then maybe everyone might be in a
public area and be comfortable. The only helpful way to avoid the negative
effects of second hand smoke is to insist on a smoke-free surroundings
whenever possible. Only the non-smoker can be completely satisfied. Non-
smokers want not to smoke and are left alone, while people who choose to smoke
are told when and where they can smoke. Because there are now selected areas
for smokers and non-smokers someone could enjoy a meal without being
uncomfortable. California law now requires that all restaurants be smoke-free
and that all bars become smoke-free on January 1, 1998".
Passive smoke increases the risk of heart disease and heart attacks by
increasing a person risk of developing blood clots. Therefore, Non-smokers can
encourage smokers to walk outside to smoke and open windows to keep the room
ventilated to minimize the consumption of second hand smoke.
