“Living the American Dream: Owning Your Own Home”

In February, the AKPsi Chicago Alumni Chapter held its inaugural professional event, “Living the American Dream:

Owning Your Own Home” which met our goal to be a resource and establish our chapter among other professional

networking organizations of Chicago.

The event was attended by alumni, students and friends of AKPsi in the

Chicago area. We welcomed Arthur Bettuzzi of Ryan Hill Realty and Mar-

quette Companies for our keynote speaker to educate us on how to live the

“American Dream” and invest in your future, by owning your own home.

From the types of ownership to the questions you should ask, Art gave us

an overview of the process of buying a home. With all of the information he

provided, there was one point that he drove home and said was the most

important to remember – take advantage of the opportunity to benefit from

the appreciation in real estate. By owning a home, you are leveraging your

money in conjunction with the bank’s money (or loan) to assist with your

purchase. Appreciation is derived from the total purchase price of the home and not just your portion. Therefore, you

are receiving the benefit of appreciation on the Bank’s money as well as your own, which is why real estate is proven

to be the most prevalent way to build wealth.

Joining Art, Peter Argianas, President of Gold Coast Funding and Gold Coast Bank, explained the mortgage process.

He covered the various types of loans, what you need to do to qualify, and the changes in the mortgage industry.

When looking for a loan, Pete strongly encourages us to “get out of the 30 year mindset,” meaning there are other

products, such as Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARM), that may be more beneficial for your situation depending on

how long you intend owning the home. With creative financing you may receive lower payments and qualify more

easily, allowing you to be a homeowner sooner than later.

Both Art and Pete agreed, becoming a homeowner is the best investment decision you can make for your future. We

are in a time known as a “Buyer’s Market,” meaning the opportunities and tools available to you are at their greatest

peak.

The Chicago Chapter received much positive feedback from this event where some have said, “It inspired me to do

what I need to do.” Through our efforts to continue to be a resource not only to our brothers in Chicago, but throughout

AKPsi we have produced a DVD of the program. We hope other chapters will benefit by using the material for a pro-

fessional event, learn about the process of home ownership and gain clarification on one of today’s hot topics, the real

estate market.

Creating Unity

Brothers to Brooklyn

Over 35 AKPsi brothers and guests, including students, alumni, and pledges from all around the U.S., converged

upon New York City this past October 3rd - 5th for the 1st annual Brothers to Brooklyn celebration. The event,

which culminated in a ceremonial crossing of the Brooklyn Bridge on the morning of Founders' Day, was put to-

gether with help from the AKPsi Chicago Alumni Chapter and the AKPsi Capital Area Alumni Chapter. Matt

McCall of the Chicago Alumni and David Johney of the Capital Area Alumni represented these

chapters in New York City. Matt is also an alumnus of the Theta Nu chapter at the University of South Alabama,

while David is also an alumnus of the Omega Kappa chapter at Towson University in Maryland.

The goals of Brothers to Brooklyn were to bring brothers together to celebrate the anniversary of AKPsi where it

all began; to provide entertainment and a closer look at the city the Founders called home; and most importantly,

to bring forth strong bonds of brotherhood at the unforgettable setting of the Brooklyn Bridge.

"It was, without a doubt, my most memorable moment as a brother of AKPsi ," assistant organizer Matt McCall

said. "It was an amazing feeling to be up there with all my fellow brothers on the bridge – not just a symbol of the

fraternity's founding, the actual history. I remember walking across a replica of the Bridge at the Las Vegas

Convention in 2005. That was good, but this was a thousand times better."

Up bright and early at 5:30 am on October 5th, Brothers to Brooklyn attendees made their way toward the

Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge from all directions: Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey. The group more

than doubled in size when President of AKPsi, Andrea Nemeth; her husband Vadim Shleyfman; and 17 brothers

from Andrea's alma mater of Montclair State University came to New York for the crossing. Four brothers from the

Baltimore, Maryland area also arrived Sunday morning; three represented Towson University, and one

represented East Carolina University. Clouds and rain obscured the sunrise, but neither they nor cool

temperatures could deter over 30 brothers and guests from taking part.

Just after 7:00 A.M. on Founders' Day, David Johney and Matt McCall kicked off the official Brothers to

Brooklyn festivities by reminding the brothers in attendance why they were on the Bridge, and what this day meant

to the fraternity. "On this date in 1904, 10 men founded an organization that is now known as AKPsi.

AKPsi was founded with the core values of unity, knowledge, service, integrity and brotherhood. Today by

coming together from all parts of the world we demonstrate the values of unity and brotherhood as we celebrate

the day our fraternity was founded." --David Johney

After reciting the Creed of AKPsi , the brothers held a moment of silence "in honor of all brothers of the fraternity,

past and present." This was followed by an opportunity for several brothers to speak about the difference AKPsi

has made in their careers and lives. To conclude the ceremony, brothers joined hands, sang the Anthem of Alpha

Kappa Psi, and then walked over the Brooklyn

Bridge from Brooklyn into Manhattan.

"[We] got to meet some new people and reconnect

with some old," said Brother Andrew Metz, from

Towson University in Maryland. "The best part of the

whole trip was that we were able to take a pledge

[Andrew Blair, who has since become a brother]. It

was a fun trip and something I can't wait to do next

year, but hopefully with more brothers from both our

chapter and others around the country."

Planning for the second annual Brothers to Brooklyn,

to be held October 3rd through 5th, 2009, is already

under way!

Reminded of Integrity

2008: A Year of Wishes

The last two years I’ve written to my friends, family and brothers around the holidays telling them of fun and most

exciting times that were had in the previous year. It is my way to show my gratitude to those that have made a dif-

ference in my life. However, this year I found it very difficult to select a few special times and mention all the people.

I realized this year that even words will never be able to express how truly grateful I am to have had so many amaz-

ing experiences throughout 2008. My wish is if you are reading this, you know I am grateful to have you in my life.

Coming into the year I had wished to find more ways to give back, serve a purpose and make a difference. The

wish came true in ways that I could have never imagined when I dedicated more of my time as a volunteer and took

the opportunity to travel the country. Over the course of a year, I spent over three months traveling thousands of

miles, had visited 28 states, and had met a lot of wonderful people.

From January when I built houses in Mississippi with Naperville Responds Hurricane Katrina Relief until December

when I spent the holidays in Wisconsin with my family, I learned that what we call “home” is truly the most important

place and can mean different things to each of us. Most of all, I found the old cliché “home is where the heart is”

was true for most I met, especially when you see what it means to those that have lost it.

Fortunately, the travels once again led to an opportunity to “go anywhere and always have my brothers.” In Janu-

ary, I met up with brothers in Alabama and Louisiana for my first taste of Mardi Gras. Then, in April I tried out my

first road trip when I went to Texas to meet up with some brothers. On the way I had my first encounter with a com-

pany called Roadtrip Nation in Oklahoma, which helps college students and recent graduates find their paths in life.

It was July when I took more time to explore and was on a road trip for a few months. What started as relocating to

a warmer climate soon became an amazing adventure of brainstorming with brothers across the country about how

we could help take our organization to the next level – from Good to Great! The first stop leaving Illinois was Indian-

apolis, IN where Brother Jessica Kerns would give me the tour of the AKPsi Heritage Center. From there I would go

to Florida for a friend’s wedding and meet up with Brother Brenda Hughes who took me to the place where dreams

come true, Disneyworld. On my way back to Wisconsin to pick up my nephew, I would make a stop in Kentucky

picking up Brother Paula Elaine Minton to join me. We made our way to Purdue to visit more of our AKPsi brothers.

In August, I headed out west through Minnesota, making a stop at the Mall of America with Brother Jeanette

Sterner. Then, on through the Badlands to see Mount Rushmore, visit Brother Chesney Rathbun and see Lynyrd

Skynyrd at Sturgis. Utah offered a chance to meet up with my aunt Jen in Salt Lake City and even a late night stop

in Reno.

Coming into California, I was up and down the coast from San Francisco to San Diego. There were quite a few

exciting times on the coast touring with my brothers. The plan became to go as far as I could, which coincidentally

brought me to the end of the Lewis and Clark trail in Seaside, OR where I met up with Brothers Dave and Wendy

Wendroff. My final destination was Seattle, WA in September when I decided to turn around and come “home” to

Illinois.

As pioneers in history, I doubt Lewis and Clark knew the level of success of their expedition at the time or recog-

nized all they had accomplished. I now realize that “Angela’s Adventures” had made a difference, allowed dreams

to be shared and opened new doors of opportunity. I learned that by taking a risk of not knowing where you’re going

you can discover exactly where you want to be, know exactly what to do and how to make it happen.

So, how did I make dreams come true? Wishes were made in fountains everywhere I went! Each time I would I

look at a penny, remind myself of the integrity of great leaders and the words of Abraham Lincoln, “I do the very

best I know how – the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end.”

My WISH for you is that you have all you desire, your DREAMS come true and you make a DIFFERENCE in 2009!

As for me, I know there will definitely be more travels and I hope to meet up with you along the way!

In U... & I…

Save the Date for PROFESSIONAPALOOZA

Inspired by AKPsi students at the University of Kentucky, Professionapalooza is an

event that will take place the first weekend in May and will be hosted by several

AKPsi Chapters. It will be comprised several professional events that teach key

In October, the Omicron Psi Chapter at the University of Kentucky hosted an all day

series of professional events. Activities included mock interviews and seven work-

sionapalooza, indicated to our students that a huge professional event would be held and it would be a lot of fun to attend. After

the success we had, we are now encouraging other chapters to host a Professionapalooza in their town and use the name to

brand AKPsi professional events. It will show others that our organization is one that does big things in business!”

Taking it to the next step, the AKPsi chapters in Chicago are working together to combine their resources and continue to build

the brand by hosting Chicago’s 1st Professionapalooza. On May 1st, the Tau Chi Chapter at DePaul University will host its 6th

annual fashion show, followed by the AKPsi Chicago Alumni Chapter’s 2nd annual professional event to make it a professional

and fun weekend in Chicago.

In the past, the DePaul students have had such success that there were multiple runs with sold out shows which helped to raise

money for their chapter as well as a local charity. Tau Chi President, Judy Lee, says, “The AKPsi Fashion Show at DePaul is

definitely an event that many brothers look forward to planning and attending year after year. It provides our chapter with a great

opportunity to not only market AKPsi to the DePaul campus but also to show the community and the brothers that we are more

than just a business fraternity and we can have fun too! Not only do we get to show off fancy looking clothes, but we also get to

help out a local charity called the Heart Gallery of Illinois. Between the two shows, we host a silent auction where people can bid

on items that were donated to us by both local and national businesses. The silent auction has become a tradition of the fashion

show for the past two years and we hope to continue this tradition in future years to come.”

The AKPsi Chicago Alumni are also excited to continue success of our professional programs with our 2nd annual event, “Living

the Dream: Owning Your Career.” Event Coordinator, Alison Jennings, said, “It was natural for us to stick a similar theme from

last year. This year there is a transition from home ownership to career ownership, however both workshops are geared toward

teaching others that choices are theirs to make. We want to give our attendees the information and tools to make good choices

in their lives.”

“About 800 students, alumni and guests gathered together in DC to celebrate the fraternity’s successes, network with

chapters around the country, and conduct meetings to continue its growth. [It is time spent] recognizing the hard work

of the students and alumni alike as various chapters, brothers and volunteers received awards. A memorable

experience for those who attended, the convention was definitely a success!”

~ Ronan Tipan

Memories of the 2003 Convention in Chicago:

“It was at the 2003 Convention in Chicago when I felt most proud to be a

Brother of AKPsi – as a speaker, a student, and someone who believes in

the future of the Fraternity. Now as an Alumni Brother, convention is a dif-

ferent experience. You have the chance to see how the student chapters

are growing and changing. There are networking opportunities, new speak-

ers, and alumni activities. Bring the family! Orlando is a place that was

made for children. So, thanks to Wendy Wendroff and all her hard work

over the years. I know that I am one alumnus that will see you in August!”
