The Glass Slipper Fits all Beautiful Feet
Opening Devotion
The uniqueness of the glass slipper is that people can see the foot through the shoe. Did you ever think about this:
people can see Christ through our lives and our works. When we mentor each other, when we work in our personal
mission fields, and when we save our mites, we are putting on “God’s glass slippers” so that others might see Christ.
This retreat will focus on 3 ways we wear God’s Glass Slippers: mentoring, missions, and mites.
Many of us tried on the glass slipper when we came in this room today. Some feet were the right size for the slipper
and some were not. There are many different shapes and sizes of feet. Some are good at dancing. Others are good at
running or jumping in sports. Some are smooth, with toes polished. Others wear the signs of walking barefoot in the
garden or in the dark!
Our talented feet are surely gifts from God to us and our talented feet are gifts from us to other people as we step out
into a mission field every day. Some of us have had the privilege of going on mission trips with MOST or our church
families to places far away. Actually, God has placed all of us in a mission field. It might be with your family, in your
neighborhood, at work, in your community, or among your friends. God has placed us in our personal mission field for
a reason: to tell everyone of His love and salvation. We put on His glass slipper when we work in our mission fields.
Then there are times when our feet get tired. We’ve walked too much or stood too long or wore shoes too tight. Our
feet need good arch support. We know from the beginning that God knew it was not good for a person to be alone,
without good support. So He created Adam and Eve – to communicate, share with each other, help each other, to
support each other. In the New Testament, God reminds us as followers of Christ we are a part of the body of Christ.
The body of Christ can be a place where we can let our hair down, take off our shoes, smelly feet or not, and be
ourselves. We can mentor each other, love and be loved, forgive and be forgiven, remind and be reminded that we are
indeed God’s children. Mentoring each other can support us both on days when our feet are tired and on days when our
feet feel great. So we do not become tired and worn out using the gifts God has given us, we put on His glass slippers
when we mentor each other.
Perhaps we should have entitled this retreat The Glass Slipper fits all Beautiful Fete (spelled f-e-t-e), because that is
what this is: a festive celebration of beautiful talents that God’s people possess, individually and as members of the
body of Christ. It is so amazing when God’s talented feet join together. The result is much more than what we could
accomplish if each of us worked independently. Our mite boxes are evidence of this statement. One little mite is
dropped in one little cardboard box. When the contents of these little boxes are combined in our Michigan District we
will support 16 mission projects with $230,000. And with our sisters across the country, these boxes will support 19
mission grants with $1,825,000.
When we reflect on that, it is almost more than we can comprehend. Yet there is an even greater miracle. God fits all
our feet-the size A to the EEE-into His glass slippers. He gives us mission fields to go. He gives us each other for
support. He gives us mites to use. We, who in faith believe Jesus is our “Beautiful Savior”, find our feet shaped by Him
do His work, “wherever and whenever He has need of us”.
