This house was to be built on the outskirts of Santiago, so the supervision
of the construction could not be exhaustive. For this reason, a simple cuboid
form was adopted. Moreover, the restricted budget obliged us to choose
a rapid and economical construction system. We decided on a system
widely used in U.S.A. and Canada, and which is starting to be used here
in Chile in Georgian style houses, consisting of a structure made of
galvanized steel profiles, OSB plywood panels, and plastic imitation wood
siding. On the one hand we found it an interesting prospect to escape from
the existing prejudice against imitations in this case the plastic siding
which is imitation wood; and on the other we were keen on the idea of
making this house the prototype for a low budget pre-fabricated dwelling
like the Georgian houses that can be seen on the coast, which could be
brought from U.S.A. in kit form. The exact site for the house was decided
once the proposal had been won. For that reason it was preconceived as
a table on piles, not touching the ground. The connection to the ground is
by a ramp, an idea which was developed during the finishing phase.
The house is organized longitudinally, on two floors, with the bedrooms at
the ends. The relationship with external space is given through empty
cubes, lined internally with pine. These cubes are the lenses of the house,
which focus, or zoom in, on the distant landscape.
