Eating habits

Assessment task

This assessment task covers using percentages and decimal numbers in numeracy.

Part 1

1. Record the amount and type of food that you eat

over any consecutive 3 day period, in a table like the

one shown below. Include the amounts (eg 1 apple,

200g hamburger, 2 cans cola etc). Use Excel to

make the maths easier or you can create your table

by hand.

2. Use the NutritionData website, or do your own research, to find the amount of

fat and kilojoules in each item you’ve eaten. If you use the NutritionData

website, you’ll need to change the calories into kilojoules. 1 cal = 4 kJ

Calories and kilojoules are measurements of energy. There are approximately 4

kilojoules per calorie .

5. Change your average daily intake of Sodium and the average daily kilojoules into

percentages of the levels recommended for males/female teenage, as

suggested in Better Health or the NutritionData websites. (To do this,

 find the recommended dietary intake (RDI) for sodium in milligram per day.

 change your intake of Sodium into a percentage of the recommended daily

levels, following these steps:

(Your intake of sodium)-------- X 100

(recommended daily intake of sodium) 1

6. Explain in detail whether your current diet is adequate considering your

lifestyle.

 comment on the total fat and kilojoule content

 refer to the healthy eating pyramid and comment on whether you think your

current diet is healthy

Part 2

7. Write yourself a healthy nutrition plan for the next 3 days. Use websites such

as http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/ to assist in writing your healthy nutrition

plan.

8. Follow your “healthy” diet for 3 days. Explain any differences you felt after

following your healthy nutrition plan in place of your normal food intake.

Include:

 How you felt making better food choices

 Was it more or less convenient to ‘eat healthy’ ?

 Was it more or less expensive to ‘eat healthy’ ?

If you are already a healthy eater, comment on any

difficulties you have staying away from junk foods.
