Login Procedure
When you turn on your computer, you will be prompted with a Login box. By logging in
you will be able to connect to the network server which has additional drives for you to
store and share files. Not logging in will allow you access to your computer, but not the
network drives.
1. Enter your User name. The user name is usually assigned to you by using the first
initial of your first name plus your last name (example: kscott for Karen Scott).
2. Press the Tab key on your keyboard to get to the Password box and type in your password
(an asterisk will appear for each character you type). New users will usually have a blank
password.
3. Wait for the login procedure to finish and then you will see the Windows 95 desktop.

The first time you login to your computer there will be a second login which is a
Windows 95 login.
The Windows 95 login is not necessary and can be eliminated if the you do the following.
When the login screen appears, delete any text in the user name and password boxes.
Then click the OK button. From now on, your computer will skip this login.

Shutting Down Your Computer
At the end of the day you will want to shut down your computer. It is important to shut
down correctly. If you do not shut down properly, you will get error messages the next
time the computer is turned on.
To quit Windows and shut down
1. Click the and then click Shut Down.
2. Click Yes. (Make sure the line Shut down computer? is selected).
3. Your computer will shut down.
4. Turn off the monitor and computer after the computer tells you it is okay.
NOTE: The new Compaq computers (1998) only need to have the monitor turned off.
To quit Windows and Login as a Different User
If your computer has been turned on with a different users login, you need to login with
your username and password. This way you get your personal H drive along with all of
the other network drives.
1. Click the and click Shut Down.
2. Click on “Close all programs and log on as a
different user”
You will be prompted with a login screen. Enter you
username and password.
Available Disk Drives
A disk drive is a storage place for all your computer files and applications. If you login
correctly you will have the following drives available.
A 3 ½ floppy (small portable disk)
C Located on your personal computer
D Usually reserved for the CD-ROM drive
G Network drive used for sharing files and folders
H Network drive used for saving files that are not for sharing (only you can view
these files)

Basic Windows 95 desktop
The Windows 95 Desktop
The illustration above shows the very basic Windows 95 desktop. Your desktop icons
may vary.
Desktop icons Graphic representations of files, drives, networks and other
resources.
Double-click on the icon to open.
Taskbar Located along the bottom of the desktop, contains the Start
button and additional buttons when applications or programs are
open.
Start button Use to start programs & applications, change settings, and get
help.
Configure the Taskbar
There are a couple of things you can do to configure the
Taskbar: turn the clock on or off, always show the taskbar
or auto hide it.

Using the Microsoft Office 97 Toolbar
In addition to the Desktop Icons you will see a Microsoft Office 97 toolbar on your
desktop. The default is for the toolbar to be directly above the task bar. The toolbar has
shortcut buttons to all the following Microsoft applications and more.

Excel Access
Application Type of Application
Word A full-featured word processor that you can use to create letters, memos,
reports, newsletters, manuals, and just about any other kind of document.
Excel A spreadsheet program that allows you to organize, analyze, create
complex formulas, and graph information.
PowerPoint A presentation graphics program that you can use to create slides,
overhead transparencies, handouts, speaker notes and flyers.
Access A powerful relational database program that you can use to store, retrieve,
and organize information.
Open an Application on the Office Toolbar
1. Simply click on the application button.

2. Use your mouse to navigate through the menu to find the application you want.
3. When you get to the application, double-click to open it.
Note: You do not need to keep the mouse button depressed to navigate through the menu.

Working With Windows
Whenever you open a program or application, it is displayed in a window. You can have
several windows open at any time, however, only one window can be active at a time. A
short-cut button will appear on the Taskbar for every window that is open. Every window
has a Title bar. To move a window to another location on the desktop, click and drag the
Title bar to the new location.
To open, close, or maximize/restore a window use the three buttons at the top right corner
of the Title Bar.
The Minimize button shrinks a window to the size of a button, and puts it on the Task
Bar. You can click on the task button to reopen and display the window on your desktop.
The Maximize button enlarges a window and displays it as a full screen on the desktop.
The Restore button returns a maximized window back to its previous size. This button
replaces the maximize button in a maximized window.
The Close button closes the window and exits the application.

Using the taskbar to switch between applications
The task bar is a quick and easy way to move from one window to another. Each open
application will have a button on the task bar. When you minimize a window it is placed
on the taskbar. To open the window simply click on the button and it reappears on your
desktop.

Windows Explorer
The Windows Explorer, is a file management tool that enables you to browse through all
of the drives, folders, and files on your system. You can add folders, delete files, open
files and applications, print documents and many other file management tasks.
To open Windows Explorer:
1. Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
2. From the short-cut menu click on Explore.
Locate & View Files
You will be able to view your local drive as well as any network drives you are connected
to. Each drive can be expanded or collapsed to display or hide its contents. A minus sign
indicates that the drive has been expanded and that its contents are visible. A plus sign
indicates that the device is collapsed and its contents are not visible. Click either sign to
toggle to the other.
1. From the left pane click on the plus sign to the left of the C drive.
This expands the C drive to display all the folders in the left pane.
2. In the left pane click on the folder that has the file you want to view.
This displays the contents of the folder in the right pane.
3. In the right pane, double-click on the file to view it.
This will open your file within the application it was created.

Open a File or Application
1. To open a file, double-click it
2. To open an application, double-click the .exe file for that application
Create Folders in Explore Window
1. From the left pane of the Explore window, click the icon for the drive you want to
make a folder in.
Click on the drive
letter C to make a new
folder on the hard
drive of your
classroom computer.
2. From the File menu, click on New.
3. Click on Folder.
4. The icon for a new folder will appear in the right pane with the name of the folder
(New Folder) highlighted.
5. Type a new name for your folder. Press Enter.

Copy and Move Files
1. RIGHT Click on the folder or file you want to copy.
A shortcut menu appears.
2. Click on Cut if you want to Move the item OR
Click on Copy if you want to Copy the item.
3. RIGHT click on the folder you want to copy or move the file to.
If you are moving a folder to another drive, then right click on the drive letter.
4. Click on Paste to move or copy the file to new location.
Copy Files to a Floppy Disk
1. Right click on the file.
A short-cut menu appears.
2. Click on Send To.
A submenu appears.
3. Click on 3 ½ Floppy.
From here you can send a copy of your
file to the floppy A drive.
View Printers
Send to menu
1. From the left pane locate the Printers folder.
2. Click on the Printers folder.
3. The right pane will show all printers connected to your computer.
