Daniel Elbaum

Executive Director

American Jewish Committee

Sunday Evening, September 18 / Cost: $6 per person

Dessert and Coffee: 7:00pm / Presentation: 7:30pm

FROM CHICAGO TO THE WORLD… You wouldn't think the Chicago office of a national Jewish organization could

have much impact on an international issue like Palestinian statehood. You'd be wrong. As the time for the

Palestinians to seek recognition of the state of Palestine in the United Nations -- a move that many observers

believe would greatly hinder peace negotiations with Israel and could lead to renewed violence -- the Chicago office

of the American Jewish Committee “is making (the issue) our number one priority,” according to Executive

Director Daniel Elbaum.

While similar meetings are going on in many cities, Chicago nevertheless is “a priority spot,” Elbaum says. Many

nations have consulates only in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and the city takes on even more importance

abroad as President Barack Obama's home town. “These people are on our turf,” Elbaum says. “This is our chance to

shape world opinion without leaving Chicago.” (http://www.chicagojewishnews.com/story.htm?sid=5&id=254749 for

complete article.)

Dan Elbaum has devoted his professional career to public service and the advancement of Jewish causes. He

became Regional Director of AJC Chicago in December of 2009. Dan has appeared in media outlets ranging from

NBC Dateline to Al Jazeera. He regularly meets with diplomats and members of government. He was recently

selected as one of the only staff representatives for the National AJC Immigration Task Force which sets AJC’s

national direction on comprehensive immigration reform. Prior to entering Jewish communal life, Dan was a

prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. During his tenure at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s

Office, he tried over 100 bench and jury criminal cases in the domestic violence division and the narcotics

prosecution bureau.

Understanding the Arab-Israel Conflict

This Scholars course provides students with a strong, text-based historical overview from the late nineteenth

century through today. Course material is designed to encourage discussion and debate, and to challenge

students to appreciate the basis of the conflicting historical claims made by all sides in the conflict. The

complexity of the conflict forces students to grapple with issues of religion, culture, history, politics, economics,

identity and survival—all reflected through primary sources, including newspaper articles, poetry, songs,

government documents, speeches, photographs and memoirs. The 10-lesson course will provide students with

new tools for understanding and critiquing texts and events as the conflict continues to unfold.

THE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

The Day of the Rejoicing of the Heart

Day in and day out, as we affirm our love and commitment to God and Judaism, we quote

the prophet Hosea (2:21), as he said, I will betroth you to me forever, I will betroth you to me

with love, I will betroth you to me with faithfulness.

Hosea expressed these words as the ideal contract between our Creator and us, but, of course,

he had in mind our daily relationship with our dear beloved companion in life.

Marriage, kiddushin, is about togetherness, it is about sharing, it is about companionship

throughout the years. Marriage, kiddushin, is about not taking each other for granted, appreciating

every moment spent with our soul mate.

As a way to express our joy and gratitude for a life together, all couples celebrating their 5th,

10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th wedding anniversary and beyond are invited to rededicate

their lives and love to each other in a special wedding anniversary ceremony to be held at B’nai

Tikvah.

On Sunday, November 27, those observing these anniversaries are invited to stand under

their own chuppah, surrounded by loved ones. They will share a Ketuvah especially designed

for this occasion and exchange vows to reaffirm their love and commitment to the blessings and

possibilities of family life. It will be my pleasure and honor to officiate at this Reconsecration

Ceremony.

If you are observing one of these anniversaries and would like to participate with your family

in what will be a truly memorable event, please return the bottom portion of this invitation to the

Synagogue office, so that we may prepare your own Ketuvah and arrange for the reception

following the ceremony on November 27.
