Federal Medical Center Butner is a Joint Commission accredited national medical referral
center for the Federal Bureau of Prisons located in the Raleigh/Durham area of NC. Staffed
by US Public Health Service officers and civilians, the site is responsible for all healthcare
needs of the inmates it houses plus that of four other prisons located adjacent to the Medical
Center. Services offered include: dialysis, mental health, oncology, surgery, orthopedics,
radiology, as well as general outpatient services. The pharmacy manages an anticoagulation
clinic as well as a pain management clinic. Pharmacists also provide HIV consultation, drug
information and pharmacokinetic services. The pharmacy also has a PY1 residency
(currently undergoing accreditation) and has agreements to precept students from several
schools of pharmacy.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency program at SRMC introduces the new practitioner
to variety of both inpatient and outpatient clinical pharmacy practice areas. SRMC main
campus serves as the practice site for inpatient rotations (critical care, acute care, medication
safety, practice management), while the Pharmacy Care Clinic and Diabetes Education
Center offers the bulk of the outpatient rotations (ambulatory care). Woodhaven and
Hospice House (geriatrics and end-of-life care) and Gibson Cancer Center (oncology) offer
specialized rotations off-campus as well. The resident serves as a preceptor for doctor of
pharmacy candidates and pharmacy technician students.

Clinical Research Students
UNC has several Clinical Research/Drug Development 2 year fellowship programs with
GSK, United THerapeutics, PPD or King Pharm. These companies are within 20 miles from
UNC. The first year is spent at UNC working under one or two faculty members conducting
clinical research studies(Phase i, ii, or iii)and/or pharmacokinetic/drug metabolism/genomic
studies in humans in areas such as oncology, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases,
hepatology, transplantation to name a few. During this first year you attend training sessions
and classes on clinical research design, stats, IRB regulations, good clinical practice, and drug
development process. You will get experience presenting at journal club, seminars and get
writing experience with protocols, abstracts, papers... The second year you will spend at one
of these companies. Depending on the company, you may be assigned to a specific
research/clinical group or be involved with many aspects of industry research and conduct
of clinical studies. You wont typically be involved in drug information, sales, marketing since
the focus is on clinical research. We also have Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamic
