Student Expectations of a Write Place Visit
To find helpful consultants.
Student peer leaders who are passionate about writing.
Consultants, not “tutors.” Consultants do not give “right” and
“wrong” answers as the idea of a “tutor” may convey. Rather,
consultants give expert advice and exchange ideas with the client.
To receive assistance at ALL stages of the writing
process.
Prewriting, writing and rewriting.
To improve as a writer.
Consultants address both strengths and weaknesses.
To exchange ideas with the consultants.
Write place sessions are conversations.
What NOT to Expect From a Visit
To find a proofreading service.
Consultants will help with mechanics but will not simply
correct a paper.
To receive adequate last minute help.
To have consultants predict a grade.
To have consultants write the paper.
Key Points to Share with Students
Don’t be afraid! Student writers will be working with
competent peer consultants.
It’s FREE! There is no fee to use this service.
Not just for English class! Write Place is open to help
students in all subject areas and on any writing
assignment.
Come as often as you like! There is no limit to how often
a student can leverage the service.
Bring to the session a copy of the professor’s assignment
sheet; it promotes a more effective consultation
experience.
Bring to the session a hard copy of the draft; this enables
the student to take notes during the session.
Key Points For Faculty
Consultations are most effective when students are
there willingly; please do not require students to visit
the Write Place.
We are happy to accommodate your course if you decide to
“strongly encourage” your class to visit or offer extra credit.
Please contact the Write Place Coordinator.
Write Place is a supplemental resource to your
course instruction. Feel free to encourage your
students to visit frequently.
Write Place can facilitate workshops on targeted
areas of writing. Suggestions are welcomed.
