Green Team Job Description
Groundwork Lawrence (GWL) is looking for NEW Green Team Members. This program offers part-time
paid positions for high school students, ages 14 – 18 from Lawrence, MA to help lead local environmental
initiatives, learn more about local food and nutrition through gardening and cooking, learn about the importance
of physical activity, conduct outreach to their peers, take part in service projects and participate in hands-on
improvement projects throughout the City of Lawrence. All applicants must be Lawrence City residents. This
is a year-round position for GWL, so we are looking for applicants committed to working both during the
school year (details below) and the summer (about 20 hours a week). Please don’t apply if you are only
interested in a school year position.
All applications (including letters of recommendation) are due to Groundwork Lawrence by 5pm on
Friday September 9th and can be submitted through email to Anna Rickards at
arickards@groundworklawrence.org or mailed to or dropped off to Groundwork Lawrence, 3rd floor of 60 Island
St (see last page of application for full address). Interviews will be held the weeks of September 19th and 26th.
All applicants are expected to attend GWL’s Annual Spicket River Cleanup Event on Saturday, Sept 24th
from 8am to 1pm starting at Manchester St. Park.
Program Participants will do the following:
School Year: Work 20 hours a month - Tuesdays from 5pm-7:30pm and 2 Saturdays a month (with
the possibility of increased hours in the future).
Participate in walking, gardening, cooking, and campaigns around important ecological issues,
stewardship of parks, open space, community gardens, the Spicket River Greenway in Lawrence, and
classroom and outdoor-based learning including field trips and overnight trips.
Complete 75 volunteer hours of unpaid service (including the Spicket River and Earth Day Clean-ups,
Glow Gala, and other events) each year.
Serve as ambassadors to the wider community through public presentations, outreach, and educational
activities that communicate the importance of your work to Lawrence citizens, elected officials, and local
Boards/Commissions.
Participate in Green Team’s Keepin’ It Fresh/Siempre Fresco Youth Venture which involves growing
produce in local community gardens and selling it to local bodegas and restaurants in an effort to increase
access to fresh, local, affordable fruits and vegetables in our city.
Help to share Green Teams Nutrition and Energy Balance Workshops with other groups of youth in our
community
Organize and participate in Community Park Cleanup Events
Engage other youth in positive environmental changes in the City of Lawrence
Create Public Service Announcements and other video projects to spread the word about the work that
Green Team does
Work with Mass Audubon to create presentations on the importance of keeping Lawrence free of trash
and protecting our natural resources to share with schools and other youth groups as well as starting
“Friends of the Parks” groups throughout Lawrence.
Skills that will help you with this job include (but are not required): computer skills
(Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint), problem-solving abilities, public
speaking and presentation experience, skills in research and writing.
