Impoverished mother and children during the Great Depression

A mother, clothed in a makeshift flour sack skirt and a tattered sweater with three of her nine children, March 1936. The

family lived in a field along U.S. Route 70 in Tennessee. Photo by the Resettlement Administration, a federal agency

established by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935 as part of his New Deal. The RA relocated struggling urban and rural families

to communities planned by the federal government.

Dust Bowl









The term Dust Bowl refers to an environmental disaster during the Great Depression in the United States. As a result of poor

land management and severe drought, winds carried off the topsoil of a large area in the southern Great Plains. This photo

shows an immense dust cloud threatening a number of houses.

Migrant worker and her children during the Great Depression









One of Dorthea Lange's famous photos of a migrant worker and her family in Nipomo, California in 1936, during the Great

Depression. Lange wanted to bring public attention to the homeless and migrant workers who were devastated by the

economic downturn. She lived with the migrants and used their words to caption her photos. Lange's approach was so

successful that California established camps for the workers.

Hooverville near Portland, Oregon

Shantytown outside of Portland, Oregon, in April 1936. When the failing economy did not respond to U.S. president Herbert

Hoover's initiatives, the Great Depression worsened and Hoover was blamed for the collapse. Hooverville was the name

given to shantytowns that were occupied by those most severely hurt by the economic calamity.

Black Thursday on Wall Street

A crowd gathers on the street in front of the New York Stock Exchange after a sharp drop in stock prices on October 24,

1929, now known as "Black Thursday." By the following Tuesday, the market had completely collapsed. The events of late

October 1929 marked the beginning of the economic crisis known as the Great Depression.
