Mammoths die out?

The woolly Mammoth
• The word Mammoth comes from the Latin
word Mammuthus
• Woolly Mammoth a.k.a The Tundra
Mammoth was said to be the last species
of Mammoth to die out.
• They were built like elephants but with
smaller ears and shorter tails to insulate
heat. The had a thick coat of dark brown
hair that could grow up to a meter long
under its belly. They had trunks with 2
tusks at the end to help them pluck grass.
The males had longer, more spirally-
shaped and more heavily built tusks than
What did they eat?
• Mammoth were herbivores and only
ate greenery such as grass and parts
of trees
Where did the mammoths
live?
• Most mammoths lived in North
America and in the North if Europe but
they also live in Siberia and places in
Eurasia.
Ice cores
• Ice cores are long cylinders of ice that
has re-crystallised over the years
trapping air bubbles from previous
time periods. Using that information
we are usually able to find out what the
climate was during that time.
What are some of the
possible reasons for
Mammoths becoming
extinct?
Humans
• Humans hunted the mammoth and
used their tusks/bones and thick fur to
make shelter for themselves.
Climate change
• During the time there was an ice age.
This cut the mammoths food supply
short and supposedly is one of the
reasons they are extinct. Then as it got
hotter the ice got thinner which made
it hard for the mammoths as if they fell
through they were not able to get out,
they would be stranded there till they
eventually died.
Conclusion
• I think that all the possibilities put
together create a firm explanation to
why mammoths became extinct. This
includes the fact that they had a
shortage of food and were hunted by
humans.
