Appeal for Donations to Earthquake Relief Message from Non-Academic Staff Association Fellow Colleagues and Students, On 12 May 2008, a devastating 8-magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan, China, turning many parts of it into infernos in an instant. The number of confirmed deaths now exceeds 60,000, with tens of thousands more wounded or missing, and over a million having lost their homes. The impact of this earthquake is in fact more massive than the Tangshan Earthquake three decades ago. Over the past month, Hong Kong people have made huge donations to the rescue and relieve efforts in Sichuan, showing the deepest concern for their fellow countrymen affected by the calamity. However, we should bear in mind that there will be very formidable, long-range reconstruction and rehabilitation tasks ahead, and our continuous care and support are needed. The Hong Kong University Staff Association (HKUSA) and Hong Kong University Students’ Union (HKUSU) have been standing in the forefront of the local relief movement, appealing actively to fellow colleagues and students for donations. Now we have obtained support from the University’s Management and Finance and Enterprise Office for a special donation scheme: you may just fill in the attached donation form and return it to the HKUSA/NASA Office, and the University will deduct the specified amount from your salary as a donation, which will be given to the Red Cross Society of China through the Central Government’s Liaison Office in the HKSAR. You may also write a crossed cheque made payable to “the University of Hong Kong” and send it to the HKUSA by internal mail, and we will pass it on to the University for its further action. Despite that you may have already donated to the cause, we sincerely hope that you will try to make some further contribution, and help give expression to the “Chinese Heart” of the HKU staff.
