Betting Banks

Leverage Explained

The Importance of Using Your Betting Bank for Betting only.

WHAT IS A BETTING PORTFOLIO?

A betting portfolio is a quite simply a combination of services and systems that when

followed together can help make you money betting long-term.

By following a variety of winning and favourable services you can increase your ability

to make money betting by spreading your investment wisely.

Betting for professionals should be considered an investment which isn’t something we

do for kicks, but is a way to make us a return on our money.

If you wanted to make money on the stock market for instance, very often you would

follow a portfolio of services and this approach when betting is no different.

One thing you should never do especially when betting is to put all your eggs in just

one basket. If you follow just one service / system and have only one investment

technique, you are really exposing yourself to a needlessly high risk.

There is too much onus on that one service to make you a profit. It may well do so but

why create such a pressurised situation? It makes far more sense to spread out the

services you follow as much as you can.

Successful investors on a range of other markets will never invest all their money in

just one or two aspects and certainly not if they are looking to make serious returns.

Property investors have a portfolio of houses. They understand a percentage of houses

may not make the returns required, and thus by distributing their investment over a

range of properties they increase the chances of returns.

Share traders have again a portfolio of stocks and shares. Once again they understand

that a percentage may go down or not make a profit. However they believe that the

majority will profit and make them an edge.

The key word here is portfolio; you simply must diversify and spread your investment.

To put it into betting terms this means to follow a range of betting advice.

-2-

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

WHICH PORTFOLIO SUITS YOU?

We have put together a whole range of pre-set betting portfolios to suit every type of

punter and their own unique circumstance’s.

Whether you are retired with time on your hands or have a full-time job and can only

bet at lunchtime, we have a portfolio for you.

You can either choose to follow any of the pre-set portfolios or use the information

supplied as a guideline, picking and choosing those services and portfolio that suits you

the most.

The results for each portfolio are listed in the accompanying spreadsheet which is

updated every month. We also feature a description of each portfolio and who it is

suitable for as well as a rundown on each individual service. You can therefore take the

time out to build your own portfolio based upon your own circumstances if you so wish.

MINIMUM OF 12 MONTHS INVESTMENT

All members must be realistic and be prepared to commit to at least a 12-month period

to begin looking to make steady returns from betting. Rome was not built in the day

and it’s a regular failing of many losing punters, that they are pressured into believing

profits must be made almost instantly.

We are here to prove that this is not the case and that there is no harm in building up

returns gradually just as you would in other investment formats. Therefore we treat

our betting as a true and proper investment, just as you would if share dealing or

buying and selling property.

This is why, for each portfolio and service we list the past 12 months returns as we

suggest you work yourself to such a long-term approach.

-3-

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

BETTING BANKS

One very basic and easy requirement for each service you intend to follow is to setup a

betting bank. Some people don’t like to do this for a variety of reasons but it is the

professional thing to do as we need to treat our investment in betting properly.

Betting Banks can be split up into 2 areas which we are going to call, A Points Betting

Bank and a Financial Betting Bank.

Points Betting Bank (PBB)

For each service we calculate the optimal amount of points you need to assign into a

betting bank. This protects you from losing runs, enhances winning runs and keeps

staking consistent over time.

Each service stakes differently so this Points Betting Bank (PBB) is optimised for each

individual service. This allows you to stake efficiently on each service and in

confidence that your Financial Betting Bank (see below) won’t go bust.

Our PBB for each service take into account the historical worst losing run for so that

should such a poor run happen again in the future, then no more than at worst 50% of

any betting bank should be lost.

For example a service may advise regular bets all at 1 point stakes. Historically we can

see that the worst historical losing run is -20 pts. Therefore it is safe to assume that a

50pt bank should see if joining at the onset of a similar losing run, no more than 40% of

your bank lost.

Financial Betting Bank (FBB)

Of course the amount of money you can actually make from following a service

depends on the real-life Financial Betting Bank (FBB) you can apply to it.

This refers to the amount of money you set aside to follow a service, when consider the

PBB.

We recommend for each service 3 levels of FBB which are: Minimum, Average and

Large.

Minimum Financial Betting Bank

The Minimum Bank is the lowest in terms of finance you should realistically follow a

service with. This takes into account the cost of a service, likely profits over a year and

the PBB needed.

For example it isn’t worth following a service that costs £1000 in annual subscription

costs, if your financial betting bank will only make you a likely profit of £1200 over the

same period.

Average Financial Betting Bank

The Average Bank is what we feel an average in terms of finance you can comfortably

follow a service with. This takes into account the cost of a service, likely profits over a

year and the PBB needed to make a decent return.

-4-

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

This keeps your staking respectable and under the radar of bookmakers looking to

restrict and in a portfolio setting can make a very decent profit over a year.

Large Financial Betting Bank

The Large Bank is what we feel towards the higher end of your staking for services in

each portfolio. This amount will provide returns way in excess and beyond any

subscription fees but also brings with it other concerns.

Members utilising such large banks do need to be concerned with bookmaker

restrictions and making widespread usage of Betting Exchange prices. The Large bank

also comes with obvious risks in that no service can ever be cast-iron guaranteed to

make profits in line with its previous performance.

Our recommendation is that members only begin working to large banks and such

staking after they have followed a portfolio for sometime or are full experienced.

No individual new to the world of professional betting should ever start with a Large

FBB. It is designed only for the experienced seasoned gambler.

BETTING BANK EXAMPLE

To illustrate all these points lets use a few examples.

For the service, ‘Equine Investments’, we recommend you need a PBB of 150 points.

This 150 point figure takes into account historical losing runs and the current method

of staking that Equine Investment utilises.

At the current time of writing if following Equine Investments over the past 12 months

this would have brought you 237.33 points profit to their advised staking.

The minimum Financial Betting Bank (FBB) we advocate for Equine Investments is

£2500.

We then divide the FBB by the PBB to get our staking per point at the minimum plan.

2500/150 = £16.67 per point…. £16.67 is our stake per point.

If you had made 237.33 X £16.67 over the past year that brings a £3955.50 actual

profit.

When bearing in mind the cost of subscription to Equine Investments is £1295 a year,

the overall profit after subscriptions would be £2660.50 to a minimum FBB.

To the average FBB this increases to an overall profit of £7407 and to the large FBB this

becomes a clear profit of £16,109.

THE IMPORTANCE OF USING YOUR BETTING BANK FOR

BETTING ONLY

Of course it is extremely important that any money you are investing in betting be

totally separate from that which you need to keep going on a day-to-day basis.

If you are betting with money that should be used for things like the mortgage or the

payment of bills, you should not be gambling with that money. If this is your own

situation, then we would encourage you to stop betting immediately and evaluate the

situation very seriously.

Please be sure that any money you are investing in a betting portfolio is money that

you can afford to lose. That is not to say that your portfolio will go bust, but it is the

most sensible and professional approach.

Please also do not feel the need to rush in and immediately feel pressured to make a

large chunk of betting profits immediately. All successful betting professionals started

somewhere, and very often this was with small amounts as they gradually built up to

much larger stakes.

Please at all times do try and take a sensible long-term approach to making your

betting a success.

-6-

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

LEVERAGE EXPLAINED

Leverage refers to the amount of actual money that you need to invest in each

portfolio and how you can maximise these funds.

We can therefore effectively use the funds we have at our disposal and ‘lever’ more

room for manoeuvre, but only if we are sensible.

With leverage we can effectively take on board a portfolio that requires us to invest

£15,000 when we only have perhaps just £10,000 in real money available. We are

effectively levering more credit as it’s extremely unlikely we will ever need to use that

£15,000 at the same time.

Of course it does bring into play the increased chance that losing runs will impact far

greater and we have to use only sensible amounts of leverage to protect our

investments.

Bear in mind that during the current credit crunch many banks and institutions were

applying leverage of upwards of 100%! The maximum amount we realistically will

advocate is 1.5X Leverage (1.5%) although we also will calculate a 2X leverage for the

much more risk-happy gambler.

1.5X LEVERAGE

The maximum amount of sensible leverage we recommend is 1.5 times your actual

Financial Betting Bank (FBB).

Therefore if you have £10,000 in real money, the recommended amount you can

actually afford to take on if using 1.5X leverage is £15,000

To calculate the leverage you can apply, simply take the amount you have set aside for

your portfolio in terms of FBB and multiply by 0.75

For example, the ‘Budget 1’ Portfolio requires a total FBB of £2750.

With 1.5 Leverage, we can multiply this £2750 by 0.75 to give us a 1.5 Leverage

amount of £2063.

Thus we can apply 1.5X Leverage to follow the Budget 1 Portfolio with a total FBB of

only £2063.

These Leverage calculations for each portfolio are available to view in the betting

portfolio spreadsheet.

2X LEVERAGE

A much riskier strategy is to apply 2X leverage, which effectively means you have a

portfolio worth double your actual money.

-7-

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

The higher the leverage, the higher the risk and anyway considering 2X Leverage must

be aware of this fact. Our cautious recommendation is for 1.5X Leverage only, however

we have included 2X Leverage calculations for those who wish to take a higher risk.

We would certainly not advocate applying leverage higher than 2X as this drastically

increases the risk of your betting portfolio.

With 2X Leverage if you have £10,000 in real money, the recommended amount you can

actually afford to take on if using 2X leverage is £20,000

To calculate the leverage you can apply, simply take the amount you have set aside for

your portfolio in terms of FBB and multiply by 0.50

For example, the ‘Budget 1’ Portfolio requires a total FBB of £2750.

With 1.5 Leverage, we can multiply this £2750 by 0.50 to give us a 2X Leverage amount

of £1375.

Thus we can apply 2X Leverage to follow the Budget 1 Portfolio with a total FBB of only

£1375.

These Leverage calculations for each portfolio are available to view in the betting

portfolio spreadsheet.

SECTION 2: SPREADSHEET EXPLAINED

This section helps to explain the Betting Portfolio spreadsheet that is sent to

members each month. It is updated each month so you can follow and track

the 12 month performance of each portfolio.

Firstly open up the file Betting_Porfolio.xls

At the bottom of the spreadsheet you can view different worksheets, each of which has

a different name.

Each sheet contains the following information which is explained below.

Service Name – The name of each service featured in the portfolio.

Cost 12 – This is the cost of each service in terms of subscription fees over a 12 month

period.

Age – The number of months over which the service has been in operation.

Points Betting Bank – The suggested Points Betting Bank size for each service.

12 M – The rolling points profit generated by each service over the past 12 month

period.

FINANCIAL BANK SETTINGS

There are calculations made to 3 different financial bank settings, Minimum, Average

and Large.

A Minimum bank is the lowest financial investment amount we would consider for each

service. This takes into account historical profits as well as betting bank point size.

The Average bank is an average amount of financial investment we would consider for

each service. Again it takes into account historical profits as well as betting bank point

size.

The Large bank is a large amount of financial investment we would consider for each

service. Again it takes into account historical profits as well as betting bank point size.

For each of Minimum, Average & Large we produce the following calculations

Financial Betting Bank (Min, Ave, Large) Found in Column H, M & S

This is the amount of money you need to put aside for each betting bank in order to

follow the service. This is when each service is judged over a 12 month period and

using the recommended betting bank point size.

For example the minimum recommended betting bank for Blue Sky Racing is £2000.

Bank Per Pt (Min, Ave, Large) Found in Column I, O & T

This is the financial size of each point when listed to the recommended betting bank

size.

For example the minimum amount for Blue Sky Racing is £2000 and we suggest a 50 pt

bank. Therefore each pt is equivalent to £40 (£2000 divided by 50).

12m return (minus fees) Found in Column J, P & U

-9-

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

Working to each size bank and recommended staking, this is the past 12 months profit

after subscription fees have been deducted.

12m ROI (minus fees) Found in Column K, Q & V

Working to each size bank and recommended staking, this is the past 12 months return

on investment after subscription fees have been deducted.

Total Since Entry Found in Column L, R & W

This is the total profit for each service since they were actually entered into each

portfolio. Again this is calculated to all three financial sizes.

WORKLOAD PER WEEK

The Work-load per week column (highlighted in yellow) indicates the time in minutes

to follow each individual service on a weekly basis. This is the weekly average, which

can obviously fluctuate dependent on many variables in the service. (For example a

football service will give considerably less bets in the football close season, then when

the season is in full swing).

The Work-load PW calculation is the average amount of time required per week to

follow the whole portfolio. This is expressed in minutes.

PORTFOLIO CALCULATIONS

On each individual portfolio worksheet there are also further calculations provided.

12 Month Total Cost: This is the cost of following each portfolio in terms of

subscription fees over a 12 month period

Average Months Age: This is the cumulative average age of the services in the

portfolio expressed in months.

There are also calculations on the total profit, cost and leverage made to 3 different

bank settings, Minimum, Average and Large.

Total: This is the financial size required to follow this portfolio to either Minimum,

Average or Large settings.

1.5X Lev: This is the financial size required to follow this portfolio to either Minimum,

Average or Large settings and applying 1.5 X Leverage

2X Lev: This is the financial size required to follow this portfolio to either Minimum,

Average or Large settings and applying 2 X Leverage

12m return (-fees): This is the overall profit from following each portfolio over a

rolling 12 month period and deducting subscription fees. Calculated for Minimum,

Average and Large settings.

Total So Far: This is the Total amount of profit for each portfolio since this service

began. Calculated for Minimum, Average and Large settings.

THE LATEST WORKSHEET

The ‘latest’ worksheet tracks the monthly performance of each service since its entry

into a Betting Portfolio.

Highlighted in blue in the ‘latest’ worksheet you will see the totals for each service

during recent months and also the total amount (This will become more useful as we

have more months under our belt).

In addition you can also see the monthly profit and loss (March, April P/L) and the total

loss (Total P/l) for each of the minimum, average and large financial bank settings.

This worksheet will help you keep track of each service and how it has performed since

being featured in the Betting Portfolio service.

THE REMOVED WORKSHEET

The ‘Removed’ worksheet keeps a record of all services since dropped from the

Portfolio range. You can also see the performance to Minimum, Average & Large FBB

stakes. Hopefully we will not see too much action in this area but as we move forward

we will need to add and remove a few services at times.

Each service which features in the Removed spreadsheet is also now applied across the

board to each Portfolio. This is listed in each relevant Portfolio worksheet, underneath

‘Historical Removed Services’, where you can see the profit or loss any removed

service has generated.

Additionally any profit or loss from a removed service has been calculated into the

‘Total So Far’ figures.

The great aspect about this new calculation is that it takes into account any losses (and

in some cases profit) generated by subsequently removed services.

THE HOLD WORKSHEET

The Hold worksheet has been introduced to represent those services that we

recommend that no new members join at this time. Anyone who is currently a member

is advised to still follow where possible although ensure they are aware of the

situation.

A Hold rating enables us to put certain services on ‘pause’, and so enabling us from

having to remove them altogether from each Portfolio.

Full details on the Hold section and those services included within this can be found in

Issue 6.

In the Betting Portfolio Spreadsheet, a service currently on hold is highlighted in

Yellow.

THE OVERALL WORKSHEET

- 11 -

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

The Overall sheet has been implemented at members request to give an overview of

the ongoing progress of each portfolio.

At a glance you can see the total cost of each portfolio in subscription fees in both

yearly and monthly calculations. The monthly cost is called the Effective Monthly Cost

(EMC) and is a great way of seeing how far ahead of subscription fees each portfolio is.

A portfolio maybe in profit, but if that amount is less than what it effectively costs in

subscription fees to follow, it defeats our objective here. Thus the Total Profit – EMC

column is very useful as it illustrates if a profit or loss is seen after deducting

membership fees.

You can also see the overall profit for each portfolio to minimum, large & average

stakes.

Please note that the Overall worksheet is an overview and should only be used as a

guideline to profitability.

THE PERCENTAGE PORTFOLIO

In Issue 2 of this service we began looking at applying rolling percentage banks to help

improve returns as we test the water with this dynamic staking method.

The Percentage Portfolio comes in its own spreadsheet (Percentage_Portfolio.xls) due

to its differing nature of operation from the other portfolio examples.

This rolling portfolio features 3 services (Big Mike Betting, Sports Investor & Punter

Profits NH) where we update the betting banks for each at different time periods and

then adjust our stakes accordingly. This is an opportunity to track the live progress of a

percentage based rolling staking plan.

Both Big Mike & Punter Profits NH allow the punter to work with a strategy that appeals

to those that like to adjust their stakes after every day.

Sports Investor works different as we recalculate stakes after every 100 bet period

(roughly every 6-8 months).

You can use the Percentage Portfolio spreadsheet to help calculate your own daily

betting if you wish to utilise this method. Take 10 minutes to acquaint yourself with its

formulae and calculations (a basic knowledge of excel required here).

EXTRA RISK

The Percentage Portfolio is very much a testing ground at this time, with the idea

being to examine and explore more dynamic ways of staking.

The rewards via such dynamic staking can be much greater than simple flat staking,

however the risks are also increased. Please be aware that the Percentage Portfolio is

very much ‘under observation’ and is intended to be used as such.

- 12 -

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

BANKS & STAKING

Big Mike - £1000 starter bank. Re-calculated daily

Place market bets, all calculated to Betfair SP with 5% commission deducted.

Staking on each bet varies between 5% and 0.5% of the bank depending on the stakes

advised

Punter Profits NH - £1000 starter bank. Re-calculated daily.

Win bets, all calculated to SP+ available from Centrebet

Staking on each bet under 10/1 is 3% of the bank

Staking on each bet 10/1 and over is 1.5% of the bank

Sports Investor - £3000 starter bank. Re-calculated after every 100 bets.

Results as proofed to us.

Sports Investor requires a 40 point betting bank, thus the financial betting bank is

divided by 40, every 100 bets.

Winabobatoo - £3000 starter bank. Re-calculated after each group of bets.

Results as proofed to us.

Staking on each bet is 2% of the overall bank. This is adjusted after every round of

bets.

DESCRIPTION OF EACH SERVICE IN THE PERCENTAGE PORTFOLIO

Big Mike Betting

We have seen a very effective use of percentage stakes with Big Mike Betting’s place

bets (or Hughies as he terms them), whereby he advocates updating your stakes at the

start of each new day, based upon your total bank. Each bet is worked out as a

percentage of your total betting bank, ranging from 5% on the biggest bets, down to

0.5% on the smallest bets.

Mike advocates this method and makes it work successfully as his staking adheres to

the fact it’s a percentage plan. Generally the larger stake bets are on the shorter

priced horses (I.e. more likely to place) and the opposite applies for the smaller stake

bets being on larger priced horses (i.e. less likely to place).

As Mike’s bets also operate to a high strike rate and don’t have overly long losing runs,

there are no huge ups and downs along the way.

Punter Profits NH

Operating a rolling percentage based staking plan has been something that has

interested many when it comes to this service. It works to generally a high strike rate

which leans itself to a percentage plan although during losing spells this can be hard to

absorb.

If you are already following the PPNH portfolio to level stakes, this will no doubt be of

interest. We would advocate sticking to the level stakes approach first and foremost

and only consider a percentage bank as a 2nd smaller bank.

Finding the optimal level percentage of staking is important and this may require

tweaking as we move along. Historically this would appear to lie between around 2.5%

and 4.5%, and we have decided to place 3% of the bank on each selection under 8/1. If

a selection is 8/1 and over we will place 1.5% of the bank on it instead.

- 13 -

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

You may wish to tweak these 3% and 1.5% figures slightly, but do bear in mind the

longest losing run stands at 17, so if raising the % amounts too much then the risk of

high losses increases.

We are following all of the PP NH systems and bets at all price ranges. There is further

analysis on this service is Issue 2, for those of you wish to know more about optimal

staking.

Sports Investor

Historically the Sports Investor service has performed very steadily with an average ROI

of 15% over every set period of 100 bets.

We will be tracking their performance since the service staking plan was adjusted back

in January 2008 and illustrating the profits to this method.

Every 100 bets we recalculate the stake to be 1/40th (2.5%) of the current financial

betting bank. This is because a 40 pt betting bank is recommended if following to level

stakes.

Winabobatoo

Winabobatoo has a fine record dating back to 2007 and especially so when placing 2%

of your bank on each bet. Via the percentage portfolio we will be tracking ongoing

performance to this method, adjusting the amount placed on each bet in relation to 2%

of the overall bank. More about this can be found in Issue 7 from September 2009.

BETTING BOTS

In Betting Portfolio Issue #2 we explored the options behind a specific betting bot

portfolio. This was been designed partly due to the fascinating analysis uncovered in

our most recent Secret Betting Club issue #35 which suggested that taking a Betfair

price around 5 to 10 minutes before the race was much more profitable than taking

Betfair SP.

Many of us who take Betfair SP on a price really ought to be considering the idea of

instead taking a price up to 10 minutes before the off to vastly improve our returns.

This is certainly worth considering with some ever popular services that work well at

Betfair SP, where there maybe a whole host of people requesting the price.

In addition many of you may also like the automated manner through which you can

follow many of the Portfolio services.

What bot to use?

We have found the best bot to use for these purposes is Grey Horse Bot, which allows

you to easily and quickly place your bets.

GHB is available from http://www.greyhorsebot.co.uk/ and costs £14.99 for your first

month, £19.99 for your second month and £24.99 for each month thereafter. There is a

full review of GHB available at www.moneymakerreview.com if you would like to know

more.

- 14 -

Betting Portfolio

Step by step guide to achieving long-term betting profits

Another bot worth considering is the cheaper Bet Bot Pro from

http://www.betbotpro.com/. Only £97.95 to purchase outright it is let down by the

fact you can only stake the same amount on any bets you place in each session. Thus if

following multiple tipsters via the bot and all to different stakes, you wont be able to

do this.

We can also recommend Gruss software and their bot at http://www.gruss1-

software.co.uk/. This comes with a free 30 day trial and is £6 per month thereafter.

When to place the bets with a bot?

The records from the past few years suggest that programming your bot to take a price

10 minutes before the off is an optimal setting. You may wish to adjust this slightly as

per your own preferences.

Our own advice would be to take a price at least 5 minutes before the off. There is no

hard and fast time to always take a price, but all the evidence so far suggests by using

a bot and taking a price earlier than Betfair SP, overall you will get better returns.
