• Improved academics
     – 2001 College Entrance Exam Board Study: those with
experience in the practice of music scored 57 points higher

points and 44 points higher than the average
     – 2004 Stanford University Study: proved that those who
play an instrument/read music have an increased ability to
process language in both verbal and auditory areas through
       functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI)
     – 2006 Harris Interactive Poll of High School Principals:
graduation rates of schools with music programs are 90.2%

     Incorporating Music in the
            Classroom
• Music as content
  – theory & practice
      Incorporating Music in the
             Classroom
• Music as the basis

  – For ex: Provide students with lyrics to a song.
Then, have them analyze the words. This is a
    good exercise for examining figurative
    language, symbolism, etc.
       Incorporating Music in the
              Classroom
• Music as a supplement
  – Put content into the melodic line of an easily
recognizable song. This will allow students to recall
the information quickly. However, make sure to now
use this method for understanding of the material. It
is best to use for memorization.
  – Find already created songs and use them to reinforce
    information
