ELEC2807 Integrated Project (InfoE)

T1. Introduction of Wii remote

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 1

Something you should know …

Nicknamed “Wiimote”

The controller of the

Wii video game

console

Powered by 2 AA batteries

Bluetooth communication

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 2

Basic features of Wii remote

• Button

– 11 buttons

– Some buttons have special usage, like pressing 1 and 2 together to start Bluetooth

pairing

• Sensing

– Accelerometer

– Infrared Camera

• Feedback

– Rumble

– LED display

– Built-in speaker

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 3

Sensing – Accelerometer (1)

• Use the ADXL330 accelerometer

• To sense acceleration along three axes of the Wii remote

• The accelerometer measures linear acceleration in a free fall frame of

reference

• Which means, if the Wii remote is in free fall, it will report zero

acceleration. At rest, it will report an upward acceleration (+Z, when

horizontal) equal to the acceleration due to gravity

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 4

Sensing – Accelerometer (2)

• One typical usage is using accelerometer to capture and analysis user’s

motion

Motion Data Analysis Result

Golf

Baseball

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 5

Sensing – Infrared Camera(1)

• Resolution of the infrared camera inside Wii remote can be up to 1024 x

768

• Capable of tracking up to 4 moving objects

• Field of view is about 33 degrees horizontally and 23 degrees vertically

• Infrared light sources with wavelength other than 940nm will be filtered

by the infrared filter

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 6

Sensing – Infrared Camera(2)

• The infrared camera and infrared emitter (e.g. infrared LED) can act as a

pointing device

• The Wii Sensor bar, which is technically an array of infrared LED. The

relative movement of the infrared LED will be used for cursor position

update.

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 7

Feedback - Rumble

• Wii remote will vibrate when the rumble function is activated

• Usually, game use the rumble function to indicate a crash or being hit.

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 8

Feedback – LED Display

• 4 blue LEDs are on the front of the Wii remote

• During initialization state (Bluetooth pairing), these 4 LEDs will blink.

– The number of blinking LED indicate the battery power :

• 4 LEDs : ~ 100%

• 3 LEDs : ~ 75%

• 2 LEDs : ~ 50%

• 1 LED : ~ 25%

ELEC 2807, S.T. Fung 9

Feedback - Built-in speaker

• Wii remote has a small low-quality 21mm speaker, used for short sound

effects during game play

• The sound is streamed directly from the host (e.g. The Wii console, PC etc)
