Adventure Education Programme 2004



“Snow Peak, Hot Spring”

Introduction: Mt. Qizi is a 6206 metres peak in Tibet (the highest peak HKU AEP has attempted). Please note that this expedition is not a trekking activity, but is a snow mountaineering expedition. That is very challenging. You should be a physically and psychological fit and healthy to undertake this climb as you will have chance to stand at a very high altitude at Tibet. In addition, you must have initial experience of hiking and camping in Hong Kong or other places. Remarks: This adventure education programme expedition has been accredited as International Climbing and Mountaineering Association (UIAA) Global Youth Summit by UIAA Youth Commission. The Global Youth Summit is a recognized national youth programme that supports and promotes international cooperation and peace, and protection of the environment. The Institute of Human Performance of HKU is the first HK tertiary institution to be accredited by the UIAA.



Destination: Mt. Qizi of Tibet located at North-east of Lhasa Date: 24th July, 2004 to 7th August 2004



Objectives: 1. To go on snow climbing and mountaineering together with the other university students. 2. To understand the effect of high altitude on the human body and the techniques for the prevention and care of mountain environment injuries (hypothermia, frostbite, snow blindness and altitude illness). 3. To learn the respect the nature and build up the awareness of environmental conservation. 4. To improve self-discovery, responsibility and leadership by group adhesion and group dynamics. 5. To learn about the Tibetan culture and education development in Tibet. Activities: Snow Climbing to Mt. Qizi 6206 metres height Snow Technical Skill Training Social Service by teaching the students of Tibetan school. We intended to make several studies in the area high altitude snow mountaineering, the culture of the inhabitants and the equipment. Below are two suggestions: 1. Research on the effect of high altitude on the human body and techniques for the prevention and care of mountain environment injuries. 2. Research on the effectiveness of Adventure Education programme. Students, staff and alumni of the University of Hong Kong
