Project title CEMENT AND GYPSUM BOARD PROJECT IN LINDI
Project description The project involves mining and beneficiation of the gypsum rock
and setting up a gypsum processing plant for the production of
gypsum boards and gypsum cement and other products based on
gypsum deposits (Hydrated Calcium Sulphate – CaSO4.2H2O) at
Mbaru and Pindiro in Kilwa District, Lindi Region. The deposits are
estimated at 5 million tons with average thickness of 20m and purity
                    over 80%.
The rock gypsum deposits are situated in Kilwa district, Lindi
region within the Mtwara Development Corridor (MtDC. The
deposits are located about half way between the towns of Kilwa
Kivinje and Lindi between latitudes 09o 17‟ 45” South and 09o
                    31‟ 20” South and longitudes 39o 16‟ 20” East and 39o 26‟ 35”
East. There are three major deposits located within approximately
30 km of each other. The project area can be reached from Dar es
Salaam by the Dar es Salaam-Kibiti-Lindi road, some 440km from
Dar es Salaam and 96km from Lindi. The gypsum board will serve
the domestic market in the construction industry as well as for
                    export.

Project title MODERNIZATION OF NAMWELE-NKOMOLO COAL
                      PROJECT
Project description The Namwele-Nkomolo coalfield is located in Sumbawanga District,
Rukwa Region. The coalfield is about 35km North-East of Sumbawanga
town and 20km west of Lake Rukwa and lies between Latitudes 70 41‟
                      00‟‟ to 70 50‟ 00‟‟S and Longitudes 310 24‟ 00‟‟ to 310 31‟ 00‟‟. Total

million tons making a total of 18.7 million tons. Currently, limited mining
(500tons/month coal production) is being carried out by a local investor
for supply of coal to Mbeya cement, Mbeya Textile, Mwamba Brewing
Company in mbeya and others. A coal briquette plant has been set out for
making coal briquettes for local consumption. Modernization and
expansion of the coalmine is required with improved mining equipment so
as to produce over 15,000 tons per month (180,000 tons /yr) for supply to
local industries, domestic use (coal briquettes) and for power generation.

Project Title Production of Iron Ore-Mara Region, Tanzania
Project To establish a project for steel processing from iron ore deposit in
Description Kurwirwi village, Mara Region, the plant will be situated at Kurwirwi
and it is proposed to process iron ore at a rate of 5000 tons a day.

Limestone flux is available locally and coal for coke will come from
within Tanzania and from Mozambique or South Africa.

It is ideal to have this plant in our region due to the fact that in
Eastern and Central Africa there is no steel processing plant despite
of available huge market for steel.

The project is viable and details can be found in a feasibility study
carried out by Mara Ore Industry Company Ltd.

Project title LIGANGA SPONGE IRON PROJECT.
Project description The Liganga V-Ti Magnetite Ore deposits are located about 850 km Southwest of
Dar es Salaam in the Iringa region near Lake Nyassa.

                        SPONGE IRON PROJECT
With the opening up & development of the coal mine in Mchuchuma there is an
opportunity to open up the Liganga mine to produce „sponge iron (si)‟.
During the process the raw iron is upgraded to a concentrate suitable for
palletising prior to „direct reduction‟ and iron ore will be in excess of 60% with
very low 0.02% sulphur. The sponge iron is iron ore reduced in a solid state by a
reduction process using natural gas or coal as a reluctant also known as Direct
Reduced Iron (DRI) and the DR (Direct Iron) is a process of producing iron from
iron oxide (from lumps or pellets) directly into a solid state – unlike going thru the
molten stage in blast furnace. The final product is honeycombed hence the name
„sponge iron‟ which also still includes impurities. The final product will be +- 80-
                        90% Fe; metallizen % of about 92% with impurities containing; S1O2; S; P; Pb;
2n; Cu; Sn; Cn; Ni; and As. Sponge Iron is used as an input in production of iron
& steel products in furnace processing. Production is expected to be in the region
of 50,000 mt/y and will expand into the next phase if successful. Water supply,
electricity supply and auxiliary facilities including township will be part of the
                        development.

Project description Location:

The Mchuchuma Coal to Electricity Project is located some 600km inland in the Southern
Western part of Tanzania near lake Nyasa and close to its border with Malawi in the west
and Mozambique in the South. It is situated in the Ludewa district, Iringa region in
Tanzania. The project lies between latitudes 10°14'30" S and Longitudes 34°38'00" E and
34°53'20" E, at an altitude of about 1030m above mean sea level.

Phase 1: The establishment of an open-cast coal mine of 1.5 million tones per annum at the
Mchuchuma Coalfield and the setting up of a 400MW linked, mine-mouth Thermal Power
Station to unlock the vast economic potentials of the Southern Regions of Tanzania with
trade and investment linkages to the adjoining districts of the neighbouring countries of
Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia. The project will consist of:
                        - A single product Coal Mine on the Mchuchuma and Katewaka reserves owned by
Government of Tanzania. The mine will produce steam coal of the required grade
exclusively for initially the power station and surpluses for export.
                        - The Power Station that will generate power for the national grid and across the lake to
                             Malawi Inter-connector. The power station‟s generation output would be 4 x 100MW.
                        - A Transmission System is to be erected to connect into the national grid at Mufindi
(240kms) and (a new proposal) along the lakebed to Chilumba (90kms) in Malawi to
integrate into the national grid to support industrial development in Malawi at Mzuzu
                             and Chipoka.

The development of the village on the shores of Lake Nyasa. The Manda Village will
support the identified infrastructure requirements for the power station and Coal Mine.
