If you decide to apply for one of the schemes listed,
here are a few resources which may help you prepare the best possible submission...
1. Contact persons – the persons listed under Contacts (Column 8 in the Full List of Schemes) are previous recipients and have given their permission
to be contacted. They may be able to offer advice about the application and share their successful submission.
2. Successful applications – in the near future, examples of successful grant and fellowship applications will be archived on the EPH intranet.
Watch this space… https://intra.lshtm.ac.uk/eph/
3. Mock review & interview practice – let your Department Head know if you would like a panel of Department/Faculty staff members to review your paper application
(as a selection committee would) and/or interview you for practice. Note that not all funders require an interview.
4. Administrative steps and support – to initiate as early as possible…
a. Discuss your application with your line manager and submit a Letter of Intent (can be downloaded from https://intra.lshtm.ac.uk/eph/)
If your Letter of Intent is approved by the Faculty Management Group…
b. Inform your Department or Project Administrator that you are preparing an application.
c. Begin the pFACT (Project Financial Appraisal and Costing Tool), which you will need for the costing and internal approval of your application.
pFACT guidance can be found on http://intra.lshtm.ac.uk/mis/pfact/
We strongly suggest you attend a pFACT training if possible. Further training sessions will be held on Jan 6, 13, 20, 27 & Feb 3, 10 from 10-12am in computer room LG3
Sign up with Sue Gammerman, the Pricing & Costing Officer in Research & Grants.
d. Inform Sue Gammerman of your application and the deadline so that she can confirm whether there are any financial restrictions
or special requirements that will apply. Sue may also be able to help you with costings and some funder’s online submission systems,
and coordinate the final submission if it must be sent by the host institution’s central administration.
e. If you are applying for an EU or ERC scheme, inform Jana Sabinovska, EU Grants & Contracts Officer, for guidance on specific EU conditions as well as pFACT well in adva
f. If you need a supporting statement from the Head of Faculty, please let Laura Rodrigues and Deborah Curle know as early as possible.
5. General tips, from past Fellowship recipients:
a. Read the funding guidelines for the particular scheme very carefully.
b. Read through the full application in advance, so that you know what will be required (e.g., some funders require that the budget be presented
in a different format than you will prepare for the pFACT).
c. Many fellowships are submitted online. It’s a good idea to get acquainted with the funder’s online submission system,
and open an account in advance of the deadline (registering a new account can take more than 24 hours in some cases).
d. Allow at least 3-4 months to prepare the best possible submission by the deadline, and ensure all signatories are alerted and ready in advance.
e. Aim to have the pFACT approved at least a week before the funder’s deadline, so that you have time to address any internal queries.
It takes around 5 days for a pFACT proposal to be approved by the various managerial levels within LSHTM, so allow plenty of time.
f. If the application requires a commitment by the Faculty to provide continuing salary support at the conclusion of the award,
allow more time to discuss this with the Head of Faculty (such a commitment is not automatic, and must be approved).
r paper application
10-12am in computer room LG3.
ns as well as pFACT well in advance of the deadline.
