Community Campaign:
Summer 2006
Dear Friends,
As we write, the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Fundraising Campaign is less than six months from its official
closing date of December 31, 2006. This does not mean the work of the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea
Conservation Initiative will end! To the contrary, MtA2C’s 10 partner organizations will continue protecting
the region’s most significant ecological and recreational places indefinitely and to the best of our abilities.
What the Campaign’s closing date does mark is the end of MtA2C’s focused effort to raise $10 million in
support of the following work:
• Protecting 2,500 new acres of land;
• Continuing our municipal outreach program with town planners and volunteers;
• Expanding the capacity of the three land trusts that serve MtA2C’s six towns, and
• Setting up a stewardship fund to ensure MtA2C’s protected lands are well cared
for and safe for public use.
While this work will continue long after MtA2C’s
Campaign sunsets, we wanted to take a moment to
thank those of you – more than 650 of you, in fact
– who have helped by making a gift to the Campaign.
You are the reason we are cautiously optimistic about
reaching our fundraising goals!
But we still have so much to do. Many land
conservation projects are still in need of funding. For
example, we still need to protect:
• Over one mile of coastline in Kittery;
• Critically important habitat for Blanding’s and
Spotted Turtles;
• Drinking water supplies, and
• Recreation areas in Mt. Agamenticus’ northern regions that will connect through to the Tatnic region of
South Berwick, Wells, and Ogunquit.
With your continued support, we’ll reach our goal of protecting 2,500 additional acres of land and will
maintain the natural beauty and extraordinary quality of life we all value so highly.
Sincerely,
Helen Winebaum

LMF and LIP Grants Received
The partners of the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative are delighted and honored to announce the receipt of two
major grant awards totaling $471,000 from the Land for Maine’s Future Program (LMF) and the Landowner Incentive Program (LIP).
LMF was created by the Maine Legislature to secure “the traditional
Maine heritage of public access to Maine’s land and water resources
or continued quality and availability of natural resources important to
the interests and continued heritage of Maine people.” The LIP is a
United States Fish and Wildlife Service funding program administered
by the Maine Natural Area’s Program to conserve important habitats
for rare, threatened, and endangered wildlife, plants, and natural
communities in Maine.
Both grants will be used to help protect land in the Tatnic region
of Wells and South Berwick. This land is especially valuable as it
supports several rare and/or endangered animals and plants, including
the Blanding’s Turtle. Protecting the Tatnic lands will also help to
create a conservation link between the northern and central region of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s
Core Focus Area on Mt. Agamenticus. (Please see Tatnic article on previous page for more information.)
An Act ofGenerosity Saves a Family’s Land Legacy Forever
Brothers Calvin and Thomas Hosmer have granted a 30-acre conservation easement to
the York Land Trust that will preserve the character of Brave Boat Harbor Farm, allow for
continued agricultural uses, and prevent future development of fields and a mile of ocean
frontage. The property features a mixed hardwood forest, a pond and wetlands and a
stand of Shagbark Hickory trees — a species that is noted for its rarity in Southern Maine
where it is at its northernmost range. The open fields provide prime habitat for a variety
of field-dependent flora and fauna that thrive on the property.
“YLT is honored to be the recipient of a conservation easement on this land of
remarkable beauty and natural significance,” said Doreen MacGillis, Executive Director
of the York Land Trust. “It’s one of the most valuable parcels the Trust has helped to
conserve in its twenty year history.” The property is a cornerstone parcel abutting
conserved lands in the Rachel
Carson National Wildlife Refuge and is in close proximity to other YLT
conservation properties (see map).
The MtA2C partners join YLT in thanking the Hosmer family for their extraordinary gift.

Many thanks to our new donors and members!
The partners of MtA2C are delighted to report nearly 460 new gifts have been received since our last Bulletin issue in November 2005.
Thanks so very much to our most recent donors.
We extend a hearty welcome to the xxx individuals who have become new members of the Kittery, Great Works Region, or York Land Trusts while
making a MtA2C gift. We also thank those Kittery and Great Works Regional Land Trusts members who made an additional gift to MtA2C over
and above their annual giving to each land trust. Last but certainly not least, we thank the many South Berwick, Wells, and Ogunquit donors who
made a special gift to help conserve the Tatnic lands.
