Abraham’s Trial of Faith Abraham – A Man of Faith Genesis 12:1-4 Now the LORD had said to Abram: ―Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.‖ 4 So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abraham – A Man of Faith Genesis 13:1-4 1 Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South. 2 Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD. Abraham - A Man of Faith Genesis 15:1-6 1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, ―Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.‖ 2 But Abram said, ―Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?‖ 3 Then Abram said, ―Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!‖ 4 And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, ―This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.‖ 5 Then He brought him outside and said, ―Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.‖ And He said to him, ―So shall your descendants be.‖ 6 And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. The Trial Genesis 22:1-14 1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, ―Abraham!‖ And he said, ―Here I am.‖ 2 Then He said, ―Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.‖ 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said to his young men, ―Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.‖ The Trial Genesis 22:1-14 6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, ―My father!‖ And he said, ―Here I am, my son.‖ Then he said, ―Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?‖ 8 And Abraham said, ―My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.‖ So the two of them went together. 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. The Trial Genesis 22:1-14 11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, ―Abraham, Abraham!‖ So he said, ―Here I am.‖ 12 And He said, ―Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.‖ 13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, ―In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.‖ Abraham’s Faith Manifested: • Sacrifice Sacrifice Genesis 22:2 Then He said, ―Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.‖ Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, ―If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.‖ Luke 14:26-27 ―If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Abraham’s Faith Manifested: • Sacrifice • Obedience Obedience Genesis 22:3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, James 2:21-24 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Abraham’s Faith Manifested: • Sacrifice • Obedience • Expectation Expectation Genesis 22:5 And Abraham said to his young men, ―Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.‖ Hebrews 11:18-19 of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. – Genesis 21:12 But God said to Abraham, ―Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called. Abraham’s Faith Manifested: • Sacrifice • Obedience • Expectation • Assurance Assurance Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, ―My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.‖ So the two of them went together. Romans 8:31-32 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Acts 27:25 Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. 2 Timothy 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. Abraham’s Faith Manifested: • Sacrifice • Obedience • Expectation • Assurance • Persistence Persistence Genesis 22:9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Revelation 2:10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. Abraham’s Faith Manifested: • Sacrifice • Obedience • Expectation • Assurance • Persistence • Victory Victory Genesis 22:12 And He said, ―Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.‖ 1 John 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. Abraham’s Faith Manifested: Romans 4:7-12 • Sacrifice those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, “ Blessed are And whose sins are covered; • Obedience man to whom the LORD shall not impute 8 Blessed is the sin.” • 9Expectation Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was •accounted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How then was it Assurance accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not •while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. 11 And he received Persistence •the sign of circumcision, uncircumcised, that he mightof the faith Victory while still a seal of the righteousness be the father which he had of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised.
