2       PURPOSE

       To aid the University in its pursuit of excellence; specifically:

        o To evaluate and improve course quality

        o To ensure the best possible student experience within the resource available

        o To ensure that appropriate action is taken to remedy any identified shortcomings

        o To identify and disseminate good practice

        o To build up information needed for the periodic course review process and for
          external reviews

3       THE PROCESS

    1. The report should be compiled by the Head of School and the Research Degree
       Tutor(s) following the completion of the school’s Annual Progression Exercise.

    2. The report should also cover the Professional MD/MCh programme and any
       Professional or ‘Taught’ doctorate programmes where there are students registered
       for the Stage 2 research component. (QAA Code of Practice Section 1).

    3. The annual research degrees monitoring report is intended to be an overview and
       commentary reflecting feedback from students, external examiners, employers, etc.
       It is expected that Schools will collect and retain full information even though this
       will not be presented in full in the report.
    4. Reports should be succinct and evaluative. They should contain a summary of
       progress towards meeting School/University strategic targets. They should use the
       headings and expand as required.

    5. Service issues are collated from Head of School reports and, where appropriate,
       from review meetings and taken up with the relevant Services so that responses and
       action can be reported to the University at Research & Knowledge Transfer
       Committee and the special annual monitoring meeting of Academic Standards and
       Quality Assurance Committee (ASQAC).

    6. In addition to consideration of issues identified through the operation of the
       research degrees provision, Schools have been asked to include within their annual
       monitoring report commentary on specific strategic issues referred to them by the
       University. Any such strategic issues will be identified at the start of the annual
       monitoring process.

    7. The School actions identified through the annual research degrees monitoring
       process are confirmed at institutional level and integrated into the School's overall
       delivery plan.

4      GUIDANCE NOTES FOR COMPLETION OF THE REPORT

    1. All sections:
       Expand evaluation and actions taken/planned as required.

    2. All monitoring questions:
       Please identify both strengths and areas for improvement. Issues identified should
       not include confidential information about individuals.

    3. Collaborative or partnership arrangements
       This applies to:
       School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences for North China University of
       Technology
       School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences for University of Athens;
       School of Forensic & Investigative Sciences for King Abdulaziz University
       A separate report should be appended to the main report. The report should
       evaluate any collaborative provision using the headings employed below as
       applicable and an evaluation of the adherence to the business plan.

    4. Submission of reports
       Reports should be submitted by the Head of School to the Graduate Research School
       via email with the subject header ‘Annual Monitoring Report’.
