Academic Writing Course

This course is designed for post-graduate students of the Agro-Industry Faculty at PSU. The

course is 30 hours long and will introduce students to a general overview of academic

writing. Academic writing is a skill that needs to be practised often; therefore students will be

required to devote time outside of class to writing tasks assigned by the teacher. The

students need to have a good level of English (an EF level of 6 or above) to take this course.

The first part of the writing course will include reviewing sentence structures including

grammar and punctuation. Students need to have a strong foundation in these skills, as they

are critical for the students in producing a “good” piece of writing. In our experience we find

that when it comes to actually writing an academic piece, students are very weak in

constructing their own sentences. This leads to a lack of cohesion in the writing, which in

turn makes it difficult for the reader to comprehend what the writer is saying.

A section has also been included on writing about graphs and statistics at an academic

level, which will be of great benefit to your students. This section will give them the

opportunity to practise using academic English for presenting their research data, for

comparing and contrasting data and it will also touch on statistical language.

Because academic English is such a wide subject and this course is only 30 hours long, We

have tried to make it relevant to the Agro-Industry Faculty and the needs of the post-

graduate students, for example including a section on graphs and statistics as opposed to

presenting a written argument at an academic level. If the faculty feels that this does not

reflect the needs of the post-graduate students, We are open to discussing and amending

the course outline so the student’s best interests are at heart.
