Dr R Y K Kwok has been honored the Outstanding Young Researcher Award of The University of Hong Kong in recognition of his exceptional research accomplishments.

1

Professor Felix Wu has been honored the award of an Endowed Professorship, Philip K H Wong Wilson K L Wong Professor in Electrical Engineering. An Endowed Professorship is one of the most significant awards bestowed upon eminent academics within the University. The generous donation will become a perpetual endowment in a designated discipline, as the Endowed Professor upholds a proud tradition of excellence.

Dr K T Chau has been honored the award of a University Teaching Fellowship in recognition of his commitment and contributions to promoting excellence in teaching and learning at The University of Hong Kong.

HKU EEE Department has participated in the Joint School Computer Exhibition (JSCE 2005) hosted by Queen’s College, Ying Wa Girls’ School, St. Paul’s Co-educational College, and Belilios Public School in April 2005. During this exhibition at different locations, our staff and students had opportunities to interact with interested secondary-school students through three attractive live demonstrations, namely, Bluetooth technologies, 3D image rendering, and robot car developed by our electronic society. Even though these demonstrations are insufficient to cover the broad range of research areas within HKU EEE department, they succeeded in arousing students’ interest towards electrical and electronic engineering. In particular, they served as a medium to allow students to access different aspects of information technology interactively, and enhance students’ knowledge on the most advanced front of technologies.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering Association (EEEA) is a newly formed student organization of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering which serves as an official representative body of the association members. Their aims include promoting the comradeship and understanding among members, facilitating the communications between the association and external bodies and helping members to enhance insight to their profession. The Inauguration Ceremony held on 15 April 2005 marked the establishment of EEEA as well as the formation of its first Executive Committee.

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 24 February 2005 at the Joint Professional Centre. The ceremony was attended by the HKIE president Ir James Kwan, representatives of tertiary institutions, and guests. Five of our students were presented with the prestigious awards of the HKIE Scholarship and the HKIE Prize for Potential Engineering Students.

The Robocon 2004 local competition organized by RTHK was held in 2004 at the Hong Kong Coliseum. A total of twelve teams (including 3 teams from HKU, 4 teams from CUHK, 3 teams from HKUST and 2 teams from CityU) entered into the competition. After twelve exciting games in the first round of the competition, the three teams from the University of Hong Kong, named ‘Alpha’, ‘Beta’ and ‘Gamma’, have all gained a place in the quarter final. After two further heated rounds of contest, only the Alpha- and Gamma-teams, both from HKU, were left to face each other in the final. The Alpha-team had the upper hand and won the championship while the Gamma-team became the 1st runner-up. The Alpha-team also represented Hong Kong in the Asian Pacific Robocon competition held in September 2004 in Korea. The Beta-team should be congratulated for winning the Best Artistic Design Award.

Dr Anthony H W Choi
(Research Assistant Professor)
Dr. Choi joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, HKU in Sept 2004 as a Research Assistant Professor, after spending 3 years at the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde, UK as a postdoctoral research fellow, where his research focus was on Gallium Nitride based optoelectronic devices. He was involved in the design and fabrication of next-generation high-brightness, high-extractionefficiency parallel-addressed and versatile matrixaddressable micro-light emitting diodes arrays (micro-LEDs). He also worked on the fabrication of micro-optics on sapphire, SiC and single-crystal diamond, and their integration into emissive devices. He received his PhD from the National University of Singapore in 2003, where his doctoral thesis was focused on plasma processing and plasma-induced damaged to GaN materials and devices. His current research activities at HKU includes the development of full-colour microdisplays and biological/ chemical sensing microsystems based on GaN micro-arrays, and nano-scale optoelectronic devices.

Dr J Zhong
(Assistant Professor)
Dr. J. Zhong received the B.Sc from Tsinghua University in 1995 and M. Sc from the Electric Power Research Institute, China in 1998, where she continued work as a researcher until 1999. She received her Ph.D. degree from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden in 2003. From June 2002 to Nov. 2002, she was a visiting scholar at Washington State University, WA, USA. She joined the department as an Assistant Professor in August 2004. She started to work on the issues about Power Industry Deregulation and Electricity Market from 1995. Her Ph.D. research work was mainly in the area of ancillary service markets in electricity deregulation environment. One of the main contributions of her research work was to examine how reactive power can be introduced in the electricity market environment as an ancillary service. Her current research interests are electricity market, transmission planning, ancillary service market and distributed generation.

Dr Kenneth K Y Wong
(Assistant Professor)
Dr. Kenneth Kin-Yip Wong received combined B.E. (1st class honor with medal award) degree in electrical engineering and B. S. degree in physics from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, in 1997. He received the M.S. degree in 1998 and the Ph.D. degree in 2003, both in electrical engineering at Stanford University. He was a member of the Photonics and Networking Research Laboratory at Stanford University. His research field included DWDM systems, SCM optical systems, fiber nonlinearity, fiber optical parametric amplifiers, nanophotonics, and photonic crystal fibers. He is author or coauthor of over 50 journal and conference papers. He worked in Hewlett-Packard Laboratories as research engineer and contributed in projects included parallel optics and VCSEL in 1998-99. He also worked as independent consultant in Innovation CORE (A Sumitomo Electric Company), CA, in 2004. He was the recipient of OSA New Focus Student Award in 2003 and IEEE/LEOS Graduate Student Fellowship in 2003. He is the reviewer for Optics Letters, JOSA B, Optics Express, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology and Optics Communications. Dr. Wong is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the SPIE, IEEE, and IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optic Society (LEOS).
