vity1 : Supporting the regional networks of Centres of Excellence in the water sector
          A study on regional needs, gaps and overlapping, in higher education and practitioners trainings
          Adapt courses to needs identified above all in terms of water sector sustainability
          Address sector expertise for consultancy and advocacy needs for sector development in the region
          (training of trainers) (AIDCO, SWAP?)
          Through a multi-stakeholders consultation an assessment on regional needs in research and research
          coordination in the water sector at regional level is carried out (also in collaboration with SPLAH,
          VGT4Africa, AMESD and the EUWI)
          In coordination with SPLASH a workshop is organised addressing dissemination of SPLASH results
          related to research coordination and improvement of research and policy maker collaboration
          In collaboration with EuropeAid a workshop is organised addressing SWAP and research relationship
          (training of trainers)
          Study for establishing regional needs in research and research coordination in the water sector based on
          the previous actions
          Establishing or improving a mechanism of dialogue between research, academia and development
          partners (also including donors and governmental actors) at regional and national level
          Assess and analyse existing mechanism of consultation and dialogue between research, academia and
          development partners (also including donors and governmental actors) using also SPLASH results
          Design and plan (in consultation with the other partners) improvement of consultation mechanism and
          provide Trainings also based on SPLASH training material on research management – make available
          all trainings and training material on AQUAKNOW
          Provide feedback and lessons learnt updating used guidance document, also on AQUAKNOW

          A call for interest (or a similar mechanism) is launched in the region to the water sector supported by
          one of the institutions part of the network in order to support at least one country with a series of

          workshops on country is selected to be supported with a series/package of trainings and seminars
          concerning the Sector Wide Approach (meaning the process of sector development through
          participation and contribution of all actors) and as requested by the country. They should provide on
          demand trainings, not just a “one-off” learning event, but a support package, which may include:
          initial awareness raising and skills development on Sector Wide Approach and development;
          workshops as well as a coaching perspective, to cater to the much expressed need for follow-up support

          The Centres of Excellence should become strong partners in updating, re-orient and disseminate
          development policy in the water sector. This activity is strongly linked with the previous ones.

          Presentation and discussions on the water sector tool "towards sustainable water resources
          management" to the NEPAD CoE trainers
          Disseminating and updating of the water sector tool "towards sustainable water resources management"
          through workshops, courses, seminars, etc..
          Design a high education adapted trainings for fostering sustainibility in water resources management,
          also based on the tool (in relation with activity 1 and 2) and other material suggested, and put them
          online in AquaKnow trainings for all kind of stakeholders involved in the water sector (in relation with

          Develop straight links with RECs, the AMCOW-TAC with particular reference also to Africa

          Exchange and dissemination of good practises, mainly through south-south experiences but also in at

vity 4:   Knowledge management and development at regional level in the water sector
          This activity will be strongly related with the previous one. The Centres of Excellence should act as
          reference at regional level for knowledge management. The medium term sustainability strategy fosters
          the ownership of the AquaKnow platform currently developed by the JRC. Therefore there are a series
          of activities to the updating and carry out in AquaKnow: in the sector also through the AquaKnow
          Participate that the ACE should information production

          Support dissemination and live updating of the AquaKnow platform

          Orient AquaKnow development in order to address beneficiaries needs also for operational water
          resources the AquaKnow resources, create information, dissemination, educational material
          Based on management tools
          Publish on the AquaKnow all the related material, reports, studies, conferences, presentations and
          information produced with the previous activities
          Make a survey of knowledge and data resulting from regional programmes
          Promote a better sharing of information across countries and sectors also through meetings/seminar also
