Research in this area is limited, leaving educators in a difficult situation when they are choosing appropriate prevention approaches. The presenter will offer the research findings to date and then pose recommendations, questions for further exploration, and suggest approaches that may be unwise. Educational Objectives: At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to: 1. Describe contemporary school-based youth suicide prevention approaches 2. Discuss the key research findings behind the three major youth suicide prevention approaches 3. Explain the controversy surrounding several of the youth suicide prevention approaches Target Audience: Psychologists, counselors, social workers, educators, nurses and other mental health professionals who work with children and adolescents with a risk for suicide, in addition to family members.
