The Great American Award
Program
Dear Parents,
All fifth graders will be given the opportunity to participate in the Great American Award program this
year at F.E. Burleson Elementary School. The Great American Award program fits perfectly into the
fifth grade social studies curriculum. The purpose of this program is to encourage pride and patriotism
within each child. The Great American Award program was established by Clare Tobler in Boulder City,
Nevada in 1989.
This award will be given to all fifth graders who successfully complete the following requirements:
1. Recite the Gettysburg Address (3 helps)
2. Recite the names of the 44 Presidents in order by date office was held (3 helps, initials only)
3. Recite or write the States and Capitals in alphabetical order by state (2 helps)
4. Recite or sing the National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner” (no helps)
5. **Recite the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States (no helps) This is a required
assignment and will count as a grade.
6. Write the Pledge of Allegiance with no spelling or punctuation errors
Students have from now until May 4, 2011 to complete these requirements. Students may attempt the
requirements in any order, and there is no limit on the number of tries to complete each item. Students
will need to set a time with me to complete the tasks.
Students who achieve the Great American Award will be honored at the 5th grade graduation ceremony.
Attached to this letter is a packet of materials with all of the above listed so that you can begin
studying with your child. You can also find these documents on the classroom website under the Projects
link. I encourage all of our fifth graders to take this opportunity to expand their Great American
knowledge!
Thank you,
