Building the Great Pyramid
Monday, September 15, 2003
6:30 – 8:30
Meet in Hipp Hall Room 202
In class we will watch Building the Great Pyramid, 2003 (57 minutes).
Before coming to class read, Zahi Hawass and Mark Lerner, “Builders of the pyramids,”
from Archaeology, Volume 50, Number 1, 1997, pp. 30-38. (Archaeology is available in the
library.)
Come to class prepared with questions about the reading, (some of which may be answered
by the documentary). Additionally, jot down questions (or questionable theories) presented
in the documentary. As part of out discussion of this article/documentary, be ready to
consider the role that “Egyptology” plays in popular culture. Does this documentary have a
place in the classroom? Is it entertainment? Should we have watched Cleopatra instead?
