The UK is responsible for
               - procurement of the mechanical structures for the detector
              - completing the detailed design and systems integration


              - procurement and testing of VPTs
              - design and procurement of the VPT HV system


              - assembly of 50% of the SCs

                                       ECAL Crystals
                    Urgent need to secure additional crystal producers to meet
                    the CMS schedule for ECAL Barrel and Endcap
                    installation.

                    Potential mass production suppliers:
                    Shanghai Institute of Ceramics (SIC)
                    North Crystals (NC), Apatity, Murmansk
                    Pre-production full sized ECAL Endcap samples
                    SIC: 50 received Feb 2004 150 + 50 EB on order
                    NC: 7 received May 2004 3 more due soon


 Must ensure crystals meet CMS ECAL technical specifications, especially for
 radiation tolerance, before launching contracts
 UK leading the crystal appraisal work at the CERN H4 ECAL test beam
 Programme of intense test beam irradiation and monitoring with purpose built
 supercrystals mounted on E0’

                     Impact on UK programme, late crystal delivery

                Good planning, preparation and parallel production will be needed
                               for the assembly of 4 Dees in 2006/7


 Use all the resources that will become available :
 UK SC assembly laboratory
 CERN ECAL barrel assembly team and infrastructure
 Possible technicians at CERN from Rome
 The separate CERN TA1 group and CERN SC/Dee assembly laboratory



 Gain assembly experience beforehand
 • SC construction - will have ~ 250 EE crystals from this summer = 10 SCs
               - ‘SC challenge’ to show we can assemble 10 SCs per week
 • Test beam experience – integration of electronics, laser monitoring system
 • Dee pre-assembly experience of mechanical and cooling items, with CERN TA1 group
 • Dee electrical looming prepared ahead of time
