Hidden Evil before hidden evil…At night that lake Burns like a torch. … A stag with great horns, though driven through the forestfrom faraway places, prefers to die on those shores, refuses to save its life In that water. “Beowulf” A Resource Despoiled The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that approximately one third of all of the waters assessed by individual state agencies are unsafe for swimming fishing and drinking. As of 1997, 47 states have issued freshwater fish consumption advisories after evaluating the extent of pollution in their lakes and rivers. Advisories identify 45 contaminants in lakes and rivers including mercury, PCB's, chlordane, dioxin, and DDT. More than 100 types of human pathogenic viruses may be present in fecal- contaminated waters. Giardia, an intestinal parasite that is difficult to remove from source water, is found in waters receiving urban pollution. The use of disinfectants such as chlorine and algaecides such as copper sulfate, can pose a health threat to humans and aquatic organisms. Trihalomethanes, a byproduct of chlorination, are potential human carcinogens.
