Accelerating Hope

A Year in Review
Letter from the Executive Director
Dear friends,
Our affiliate dreamt of building a decent neighborhood for struggling fami-
lies, where children could grow up playing twilight games of kick-the-can and
parents could trade household favors. As I write to you today, the streets are
being paved in Habitat’s Cedar Chase neighborhood. These roads will be a path
to hope for 34 families moving in over the next few years.
This year our waiting list exceeded 20 families for the first time in our histo-
ry. We want to greet each of these families in need with hope, and so we are
accelerating the speed with which we deliver. Here is how:
• 34 home sites ready for building
• 14 homes to be built this year despite the poor economy
• More training to help families escape poverty permanently and to keep us
foreclosure-free
• High expectations for ReStore, which grossed over $200,000 this year
On behalf of all our partner families, thank you for the long hours worked and
the financial sacrifices made. Together, let us continue accelerating hope. There
is always so much more to do!
In partnership,
Kerry

Janna Castillo
Habitat Homeowner
Each morning 13-year-old Maria Castillo guides her wheelchair down the ramp alongside her new house on her way to meet the
school bus. The eighth-grader at Bachelor Middle School, who was paralyzed in a car accident last December, can manage many
things on her own now that she and her mom and brother have moved into
their specially designed, accessible Habitat home.
The family was already approved for a Habitat house in 2008 when the ac-
cident occurred three days before Christmas. But the accident didn’t prevent
the family from realizing their dream of a home of their own. “I like to say that
since the accident, we can still do the same things,” says Maria’s mother Janna.
“We just do them in different ways.”
The Castillos’ new home is special in many ways, Janna says: “It’s the first
house that my children have lived in.” She remembers when her 15-year-old
son Jordan was about seven, he asked her why they lived in an apartment in-
stead of a house. She told him she had dropped out of school and didn’t have a high school diploma. “He started to cry,” she says,
“and told me, ‘Don’t worry, Mommy. When I grow up, I’ll buy you a house.’”
Janna has since earned her GED, and she’s close to complet-

— Janna Janna says her new house, built by 200 women, is also special
because it’s the first house in Habitat of Monroe County’s first
neighborhood—Cedar Chase on Bloomington’s southwest side. Janna looks out over the 33 other lots where Habitat families will
live and points to a common area where residents will gather for picnics and family fun. Until then, she’s enjoying her beautiful front
porch, which she helped paint herself. “I could sit out here all evening,” she says.
