Fundamentals of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Classroom practice and exercises

I. Course Overview:



Upon successful completion of this course the students should be able to have mastered the

fundamentals of speaking, reading, and writing basic Portuguese.



II. Units: Basic Portuguese Pronunciation



Unit 1



General Outcome:



1.0 The students should be able to pronounce the basic sounds of Portuguese.



Specific Measurable Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to:



1.1 Pronounce the Portuguese vowels.



1.2 Pronounce the Portuguese consonants.



1.3 Place the phonetic accent in the next to last syllable unless there is a written accent.



1.4 Pronounce words with a written accent.

Unit 2 Present Indicative of the Verbs “ser,” “falar,” and “ter”



General Outcome:



2.0 The students should be able to develop a command of the present indicative tense of “ser,”

“falar,” and “ter.”



Specific Measurable Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to:



2.1 Pronounce and conjugate the verbs studied using all subject pronoun forms.



2.2 Answer simple questions with the verbs studied.



2.3 Ask simple questions with the verbs studied.



2.4 Use interrogative expressions.



2.5 Form negative statements.



2.6 Differentiate when to sue “tu” and “voce.”

Unit 3. Common Regular Verbs Ending in “ar;” Present Indicative of the Irregular Verbs “estar,”

“ir,” “dar;” Numbers



General Outcome:



3.0 The students should be able to acquire knowledge of some common regular verbs ending

in “ar” (similar to the pattern of “falar”).



Specific Measurable Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to:



3.1 Memorize and know how to use the irregular verbs “estar,” “ir,” and “dar.”



3.2 Know the Portuguese articles, and learn how to form and use Portuguese contractions.



3.3 Make simple sentences, and answer and ask simple questions using regular “ar” verbs.



3.4 Know what the days of the week are.



3.5 Know how to count in Portuguese.

5.1 Form simple sentences, answer and ask simple questions using the present indicative of any regular

verb.
