whether some people will listen and how attentive they will be.
Exercise

exchange one word for another. Pronounce words correctly. Take note of punctuation.
Careful and correct reading and reciting material is part of conveying accurate
knowledge.
Outline

the right syllables to emphasize strong feeling. Using repetition allows you to know your
material better.
Exercise
Practice saying individual words correctly. (1) Using the right sounds. (2) Stressing the
right syllables. Practice reading your material in an undertone or in a low audible voice,
from 5- 10 minutes a day. I strongly encourage remembering as much of the material as

Choice of Words
Words are powerful tools of communication. But in order for them to accomplish a specific
purpose, we need to choose them carefully.
Fluent Delivery
Do you find yourself stumbling over certain words and phrases? Do you find yourself groping
for the right words? When a speaker lacks fluency, the minds of the listeners may wander.
Wrong ideas may be conveyed. Avoid expressions such as: And uh, when they speak. If this is
the problem, one needs to make an effort to build up their vocabulary. A nice vocabulary omits
unintelligent sounds.
Naturalness
What do you need to do? Be yourself, be conversational, be sincere, be unaffected.
Naturalness does not include being careless, using poor grammar, using wrong pronunciations,
or muffled speech. Slang should never be used. Speak in your everyday manner. Focus on your
thoughts and not on yourself.
Volume
In determining what is suitable. (1) The size and make- up of your audience. (2) Distracting
noises. (3) The material being discussed. (4) The objective. Why is this important? Unless others
can readily hear you, their minds may wander, and the information you present may not be clear
to them. If you speak too loudly, people may find it irritating, and even disrespectful. Again, the
more you practice, the better your success will be.
Modulation: Change in volume, pace, and pitch.
(1) Proper modulation gives life to a speech, it stirs emotions, and motivates to action.
(2) Lack of modulation proves no real interest.
(3) Adjust volume when expressing urgent commands, strong convictions, or even
denunciations. Volume and modulation are closely related and should practiced together to
emphasize the feeling being conveyed.
Exercise
In your practice pay attention to the sound of your voice, the changes in volume, and your
pace and pitch.
Enthusiasm
By animated delivery, you give evidence of your strong feeling about the value of what you are
saying. Enthusiasm on your part will help to hold the interest of your listeners; It may also rouse
them to action.
Gestures and Facial Expressions
Use movements of the hands, the shoulders, or the entire body to express ideas, sentiments,
or even attitudes. Gestures and facial expressions add emotion to your speech.
Exercise: In your practice use your gestures on the exact word you want to emphasize.
Proper Sense Stress
Emphasize words and phrases in a way for listeners to grasp the ideas being conveyed.
When deciding what to emphasize, consider the following: (1) With-in any sentence, the words
that should be given added stress are determined not only by the rest of the sentence, but also
by the context. (2) A speaker may employ sense stress to show how he feels about the subject
matter.
Good Appearance
Be neat, clean, and modest in your attire. If dressed inappropriate the audience focus may
be on your attire and not on the subject matter.
Conclusion
Say something that is designed to move the audience to take action on what they have heard.
It should also commemorate the theme or context of your speech.
