FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS regarding the “2 + 2” program for Ivy
Tech Human Services students
1. Will all my credits from Ivy Tech transfer to IUPUI?
This question may only be answered through the IUPUI admissions process where your
transcript will be analyzed and credits awarded. The Passport program may assist you with
specific questions about transfer credits - http://www.iupui.edu/~ivy/. For most students, the
maximum number of Ivy Tech credits which will transfer to IUPUI is 64.
2. Where do my Human Services credits count toward my degree?
Most Human Services credits count as “Undistributed social work”. What this means is that they
count as electives in social work and contribute to the required 122 total credit hours required
for graduation.
3. Do any of my Human Services courses count toward REQUIRED
social work courses?
According to the “2 + 2” plan, the HMS 101 course plus HMS 279 (the “bridge course”) count as
S141. The HMS 109 course counts as S100. Ivy Tech students will need to complete all other
required social work courses at IUPUI BSW program, following the accreditation standards of
the Council on Social Work Education.
4. Once I apply to IUPUI, am I automatically admitted to the BSW
program?
There is a separate application to the IUPUI campus which must be completed FIRST. Then, the
student may apply to the BSW program. The admission process to the BSW program is NOT
automatic and the program is becoming increasingly competitive. Please note that the BSW
application process is MUCH MORE CHALLENGING and involves multiple narrative questions
that require a sample of scholarly writing, requiring researching and citing sources using the APA
style. It also requires multiple academic and personal/professional references.
5. Am I required to complete the Associates degree in Human Services
before transferring to IUPUI?
There is no requirement to complete any Associate degree to transfer to IUPUI. There are
certainly pros and cons of completing an Associate degree which each student must weigh.
Some of the advantages of completing an Associate degree include availability of scholarship
funds, stronger preparation for upper-level BSW coursework, and internship experiences which
provide a good foundation for BSW practica. Credit hours are also less expensive at community
colleges in general. Keep in mind, however, that only 64 credits hours will transfer from Ivy
Tech to IUPUI.
6. Once I transfer, how long will it take me to complete my BSW
degree?
The MINIMUM amount of time is four semesters as a FULL-TIME student and one summer
session. Because of the sequencing of the Junior-level courses, students must begin in the Fall
semester to follow this plan. However, it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that students who have
additional courses they need to complete from their Ivy Tech program plan, who plan to add a
certificate/participate in the Child Welfare Scholars program or who are planning to attend the
MSW program, should carefully plan and consider beginning a semester early, take multiple
summer courses or plan for six semesters.
6. Do I have to take the S141 Introduction to Social Work course if I
took HMS101 but did NOT take the HMS279 (the “bridge course”)?
The ONLY way that Ivy Tech credits transfer as S141 is IF students have taken BOTH HMS101 and
HMS279. Therefore, if you have not taken both, you will NOT be granted credit for S141 and will
need to take it at IUPUI.
7. If I take the S141 course during the summer session, can I still be
considered for admission to the BSW program for the Fall?
The deadline for application to the BSW program to begin coursework in the Fall is May 15th. If
you are registered for S141 in the summer and have successfully completed all other
requirements and submitted an application by the deadline, we will review your application and
you may be granted Conditional Admission upon completion of the S141 course.
8. Will my internship hours at Ivy Tech count toward practicum hours
in the BSW program?
Because we are an accredited school of social work, all students must complete practicum hours
which are coordinated and planned through the BSW program. This means that internship
hours at Ivy Tech do NOT count toward practicum hours in the BSW program. The two
practicum experiences at IUPUI take place in agencies with specific affiliation agreements and
under the supervision of IU School of Social Work faculty. Your faculty liaisons will work closely
with you to identify specific learning experiences and products that demonstrate your
competency on practice behaviors required by the Council of Social Work Education for all
BSWs.
