The Homework Breakdown:
What do we do? When is it due?
Miss Marotta’s Homework Thoughts:
o Homework routine is critical. Set up a time and place to focus and get work done.
o The purpose of homework is to strengthen learning and prepare for second grade,
and beyond. Homework supports in-class learning experiences. Therefore,
homework can be parent- guided but should never be parent taught. Homework
should not be overwhelming or cause a child to feel defeated. If this occurs let me
know.
o READ… READ… TALK! (Your text conversations are worth their weight in cognitive
gold! Connect life to the text when reading with your child!)
o When first graders are sick, they should rest and do their homework at another time.
Spelling:
Each week your child will have ten spelling words. Five of the words will follow a pattern
and the other five will come from the reading program. The words will be assigned on
Monday. Accompanying those words will be four “jobs”, one for each night of the week.
The jobs allow your child to practice their spelling words in different ways. As each job is
completed throughout the week, sign the spelling log on the space provided. Each day
I will check your child’s log. I will collect the logs on Friday. Please return the signed log
and any accompanying papers in the “Return” side of the Take-Home folder on Friday.
Reading:
As with spelling your child will also have a reading log. The log will come home at the
beginning of the week. Each night your child is expected to read two books. Your child
will record his/her book titles, and the person with whom they read, on the log. Each day
I will check your child’s log. I will collect the logs on Friday. Please return the signed log
and any accompanying papers in the “Return” side of the Take-Home folder on Friday.
Math:
Math homework will vary because your child will have BOTH math facts and the Every
Day Math Program to practice. The Every Day Math practice will strengthen the current
topic being studied in class. Every Day Math homework should come back to school the
next day. As a part of our Every Day Math routine, the math homework will be reviewed
and discussed in class to optimize learning.
To support your child’s learning of the Math Facts he/she will complete a Fact Sheet
each night and record their time and correct number of problems.
What do we do?
1. Give your child the Math Fact paper
2. Tell your child, “Start”
3. When they start, start the timer or clock
4. When your child finishes the entire sheet, record the time on the Fact Log Sheet
5. Next, go over the facts to make sure they got them correct
6. Record the number of problems correct on the Fact Log Sheet
7. If your child gets fact(s) incorrect, circle the problem(s) and ask your child to self-
correct by drawing a picture to check their answer(s)
When is it due?
Math Fact sheets – Due back on Friday, filled in
Fact ability will be regularly checked at school.
ACT/SAT Vocabulary: A good a superb vocabulary starts NOW! Each week 1-M will
study two of the “most frequently used” words on ACT/SAT tests. Spelling is not the goal
in this case. The goal is to be able to pronounce and define each word by Friday. You
can help your child practice the words at home to support our in-class vocabulary work.
