Portland Ave S and 34th St.
1853 – Jesse T. Jarrett, under contract with Warner Lewis, Surveyor General of the United States for
Minnesota and Iowa, traversed North on a random line 78.67 chains to the intersection of the North
boundary of the Township. Thence South (corrected) 38.67 chains and set a post in a mound for the
East Quarter Section Corner.

6/1874 – Cooley book “A” p.15 shows tie to corner
1874 – Field book entry noted, “Here I find an old hub about 20 yrs old entirely underground 33 ft E of
an old fence cor & 28.3 ft W of a stone, online between the two. Also unmistakable evidence of pit E 8
links.” A diagram showed ties to fences and two SPs.

1877 – Cooley notes the distance for the east line of section 3, the distance from the SE corner to the
East Quarter corner was 2633.72 ft and from the quarter corner to the NE corner is 2522± ft, which is
the Government distance.

Original platting in the southeast quadrant, it shows an iron monument at the section corner with
offset of 50 feet to block line.
1881 – Breakdown of Sec 2 indicated 2632.8 ft south to “harrow tooth” at SW corner of Sec 2.

1882 – Wolverton’s Addition To Minneapolis.
Original platting in the northwest quadrant, it dedicated streets and alleys, a corner post at block
corner and offset distances to block lines are shown.
1896 – Clinton Avenue Addition
An original plat in the southeast quadrant surveyed by E.T. Abbott. Shows a stone post at the block
corner with 40 and 50 foot offsets.
1905 – John Garton Addition
Original platting in the northeast quadrant that dedicates streets. The plat shows an iron monument at
the section corner location. Plat shows offset distances to block lines.
1912 – Minneapolis constructed sanitary sewers along the centerline of Portland Avenue at a depth of
about 10 feet. It is assumed that existing monuments would have been removed at time.

1937 – During a WPA project, a City Control Monument 336 was set “on true line at inter-section of
E 34th St. and Portland Avenue South”

1979 – Hennepin County Survey Division accepted the CCM 336 as the position of 0282403e4 for the
Minneapolis City Re-Survey project, The intersection of centerlines was calculated at that time from
curb and sidewalk splits.
2010 – This section corner was re-established by obliterated methods at the centerline intersection of
Portland Avenue S and 34th Street. The centerline intersection was computed from the best fit of found
property irons and the backs of sidewalk and curbs, and forms an error box 0.22 ft x 0.42 ft. The
center of this error box is 0.09 ft from CCM 336. CCM 336 is accepted as the re-established position
for 0282403e4
