tommasinianus Pictus
JP.88-45 White or pale violet flowers with a hazy yellow throat and long branches to the vivid red-orange
styles, which may be used as saffron. Easy in a bulb frame or pot if not over-baked in summer, in the
garden does quite well in a sunny, well-drained raised bed. A lovely plant, recently discovered in
Southern Turkey and slowly becoming more widespread.
Intense soft violet flowers with fantastically frilled styles, the outer petals longer than the inners, lending a
unique “Iris ” appearance. A superb plant which more people should grow. Likes leafy soil and a light
shade, in the garden, without lifting, but is good in a pan.
FN.75/3 The loveliest colour form of what I regard as the most beautiful of all autumn Crocus with
unblemished white flowers in September. Makes small bulbs only but these flower profusely. A superb
plant and hard to over-praise.
This endemic Greek plant that was once (wrongly) called “crewei ”. It differs in being autumn-winter
flowering. Flowers are white marked with black stripes on the outside. The anthers are also black yet sit
in a yellow-tinged throat. A “different” but very attractive plant..
It is always nice to have enough to spare of this lovely, yet still scarce, October flowering species, from
southern Greece and her Islands. Each autumn this makes a cluster of robust white goblets feathered and
lined with purple on the exterior of the three outer petals.
CEH.613 Deep violet flowers are striped darker violet whilst in the centre sit chrome yellow anthers and
red stigmas. The stunning colours are enhanced by a strong fragrance of saffron. The best saffron crocus
and the best producer of saffron for outside in the UK.
This is a true white form selected from CEH 613 and NOT „cartwrightianus albus ‟ of the trade, which is
just an old clone of a wrongly named form of hadriaticus - something known for over 40 years. Ours is a
superb plant, strongly saffron-fragrant with the white flowers thinly lined with five hairstreaks of deep
violet on each petal. In the centre is a stunning contrast of red styles and yellow anthers. A first time
release and a stunning one. Growth as for the typical plant.
Robust violet flowers on long tubes in October. This species from southern Greece will stand the worst
autumnal weather and still look good, flowering and increasing well. Raised from our 1982 collection in
Mani, Greece.
This is the restricted endemic of Malea in southern Greece (the next peninsula along from the more well-
known Mani) which bears wispy white flowers in the autumn. This form retain the characteristic long
tubes of the more well-known pale purple type species. Easily grown in a sunny well-drained spot or pot.
Flowering sized.

AH.8682 An elegant flower, longer and not as goblet shaped as the other clones, infused with a trace of
violet towards the petal tips. The throat is gold with a red stain at the base, and this serves to draw
attention to the lovely yellow and red anthers and style.
AH.8690 Short tubes with an ivory flower bearing longer petals than most other clones, held in a whorl
around the central red and yellow style and anthers. Externally the tube is stained with deep garnet; itself
edged with golden yellow. Distinctive and attractive.
The earliest to flower in autumn, with fragrant blooms on stout gold tubes, infused with a touch of red,
lined with deeper red. The petals have tiny whiskery tips
Commercial C. kotschyanus makes huge corms, but they are genetically damaged and do not flower. I do
not mean shy-flowering, I mean NO flowers! Reliance however has strong, clustered flowers; light violet
with contrasting darker veins and a bright orange throat.
A cross, between two closely related species, has produced a garden plant which retains the lovely golden
throat spots from both parents, but on a ground of soft violet, intermediate between the amethyst of
kotschyanus and the creamy white of ochroleucus . New.

A lovely Turkish plant which flowers very early in autumn with ghostly white to violet infused flowers,
finely lined with pale lavender hairstreaks. The throat has a bright chrome yellow ring formed from two
golden yellow marks present at the base of each petal. A robust species, good out in the garden where it
follows on from C. vallicola; the pair are the harbingers of autumn. Flowering sized corms but they need
to be ordered early if you want to see flowers
CEH.612 This is a much-talked about strain which is now increasingly seen on show benches, with
superb pale to deep lilac flowers, densely feathered and striped and all with a superb honey scent, from
November to February.
Large violet-purple flowers in October-November with a delicious and strong fragrance. An excellent
autumn species. It likes a well-drained, yet damp, garden spot. If you can offer overhead protection, from
rain splash, with a shrub you will get pristine flowers..
HKEP.9291 White flowers with a methylene-violet throat, red stigmata and yellow anthers. There is
variation in the violet but all are sublime. These are raised from seed of the original material from the
locus classicus where it was discovered by Erich Pasche; our original 3 plants came to us from Erich soon
after the plant was named. I stress the cultivated nature of these, as the original wild locality has been dug
out. Garden conditions, in a well drained, sunny spot. It does NOT like fuss - in a pot it will over-bake
and desiccate. Be brave, plant it out.
PJC.164 Strong white flowers with a golden yellow throat in Oct. One of the best of the autumnal garden
spp. Fully hardy, making large corms and good increase.
MK.3085 Some populations of C. niveus contain plants infused with a lovely light blue-lilac. These
retain all of the other desirable features of niveus ; large flowers and a superb gold throat, but add a colour
variation as well. Slightly variable in depth of blue.
VV.KA.231 Raised from a Greek collection made by the late Vladimir Vasak, selected for its late
flowering habit, which extends the flowering season of both this species and autumn Crocus generally.
This is a true and even, late-flowering, nursery-raised strain.
JMH.8149 A magnificent species. Large, vivid deep-violet flowers on long tubes in September. These
are so large and richly coloured that they can be mistaken for Colchicum . Will naturalise in short grass.
Easy, increases well and makes superb autumn colour.
VV.CR.114 The deepest coloured member of the sativus group from the high mountains of Crete.
Strongly veined and feathered purple petals contrast with bright yellow anthers and ruby stigmata. A
mountain plant, and the best of the group for cool, damp gardens.
AH.8956 Every autumn this makes rounded, deep-purple flowers with a contrasting yellow throat. A
widespread native of in the high Pindus Mts. of Greece, used to summer damp and winter cold. The
toughest autumnal spp. well suited to cultivation.
Large, soft violet flowers from September onwards. An excellent form of this variable species with short
stiff leaves at flowering (whence the name) but a good garden plant, easily grown and still around in
cultivation from the time of E. A. Bowles and earlier..
Vivid violet flowers with red styles, which yield saffron. You need about 8,000 to get an ounce, but a
dozen corms will give enough to flavour a paella or pilaff. Well-drained, highly fertilised sunny spot.
Needs warmth, sunshine, and heavy feeding, to get flowers.
Large, widely opening flowers of soft lavender, with a central froth of white anthers and much divided
orange stigmas. This is the only autumnal Crocus that does not close its flowers in poor light or cold
weather, they stay open regardless! Crete. Warm sunny spot.
AHEP.8328 The first autumnal spp. to appear, in August. Pure white flowers with miasmic violet veins
towards the tube and sympathetically coloured sulphur stigmata. The petals are drawn out into wispy tips
which give a very elegant appearance. Needs a damp well-drained peaty soil to give its best, it does NOT
like hot dry conditions. Originally from N. Turkey, Trabzon province, growing in high altitude alpine turf
with Cyclamen parviflorum . A gem.

The freely borne flowers are light blue with a sharply contrasted bright yellow throat zone in the centre.
Makes a tremendous show in February. A more satisfactory blue Crocus than C. baytopiorum in
cultivation. Well drained, sunny spot but not too dry in summer.
A new introduction of a scarce plant uncommon in cultivation and in the wild. It is found in Adana
Province, S. Turkey, in scrub. It flowers in March producing 1 - 2 flowers from each corm. The inner
petals are pale violet with a white base stained with a yellow star. The outers are silvery or buff with violet
lining. No difficulties growing this, only in getting hold of it!
White flowers uniquely patterned with spickles and dots of silver to ash-grey on the exterior. Inside the
ivory contrasts with a bright yellow throat. This Asian species is unique in its colouring and needs to be
seen to be appreciated fully. Excellent, cultivated stock which will be happy with you, as it is with us, in a
well drained soil in full sun.
(angustifolius Yellow) This is a delightful form of this tough Crocus , which lacks the normal dark purple-
black striping on the exterior. The result is a deep rich golden flower, which retains the tough constitution
that makes this such a good garden species. Seldom seen or sold, but an excellent plant of which we have
a small number available this season.
Proving to be an excellent garden plant this species is difficult to fault. Dense clumps of bright blue-lilac
flowers (in this clone) and a large orange-yellow throat, redolent of the scent of honey. Those who know
that it comes from S. Turkey suggest that it is tender, those who grow it know this is a myth. It is grown
as a field crop in Holland, and has been fully hardy here over many years. The clone offered was selected
for its particularly good, pure, colouring.
Strong flowers of good robust constitution. These are deep purple with a silver exterior striped and lined
deep violet purple. An excellent form for the garden.
This has a pale blue to violet ground colour overlaid with blue-purple flecks. The outside is powerfully
striped with purple on a base colour sometimes suffused with silvery shadows, the whole has a gold throat
which is visible both inside, and outside the flower.
A variable subspecies from W. Turkey with numerous, narrow leaves and flowers with white or pale blue-
lilac ground colours overlaid with stripes or speckles on the outside. The anthers are black before they
ripen and are notably long. First ever offering and very few.
Richly coloured blue-violet form with “pinched” flowers in dense bunches, each bloom showing a large
yellow throat. Makes a spectacular display and one of our most sought after biflorus forms, sadly in short
supply.
Very intensely coloured rich, deep blue-violet blooms with a small yellow throat and short stiff upright
leaves. Stands out from a long way away and just as good close to.
Originally from Turkey, Kumalar Dag at 1250 m. This is an early flowering population. It grows in the
adjacent province to the famous Uschak Orange. It is however a superior plant, stronger in growth, more
floriferous and of a more intense orange. Starts flowering with us a few days earlier than „Uschak Orange‟,
often in late January, lasting for many weeks. Price down.
CH.865 The pure unhybridised species with vivid orange-yellow flowers in quantity, in Jan-Feb. These
have orange anthers. This form from 1450m in the Katara pass in the Central Greece has proven to be one
of the best of our 1987 finds. An excellent garden plant.
CH.814 Again true unhybridised material originating from high alpine meadows on Galicica in
Macedonia, at 1900m. From this original stock, one vigorous, large-flowered, garden-worthy plant was
selected. Superb vivid golden yellow flowers, inside and out, in Feb.
Smaller, but unusually deep, orange-yellow flowers with rounded tips and yellow stigmata. A different
chromosome structure distinguishes it from other forms. Slow of increase, making up for this with superb
deep, almost orange, flowers. This is a true stock, but we warn you to beware, as the name is much more
frequent than the plant!
CEH.537 A superb Dalmatian species with a buff-silver exterior lined with purple, opening to a vivid
light violet interior with a yellow throat, all with a good honey scent. Rarely seen as the true wild-type but
here in its best, most outstanding form.
This originated, as did the House of Orange, in Holland. This is the true, fertile flavus (many commercial
stocks are sterile flavus hybrids) but the flowers are a deeper shade of orange-yellow than normal, whilst
the styles retain the normal yellow, for contrast. Few only.
A dependable garden species, flowering and increasing well, in a sunny spot. Clusters of miniature white
funnels, marked blue-grey at the base. Inside they have yellow stigmata. Unknown in the wild, found in
seedlings given by E. A. Bowles to Euphemia Jessopp.
CH.801 Warm bright mineral violet flowers with purple feathering outside. Inside is a touch paler with a
yellow throat. The flowers are borne in clusters in March. This superb new species is tolerant of cold and
moisture and ideal for the garden. A rare endemic of Kosovo in former Yugoslavia where this was
collected many years ago.
CEH.519 One of the most robust and attractive of the spring species. Early in the year it makes masses of
large white flowers, perhaps the largest of all of the species. The white is set-off by a golden yellow throat
with a warm rose basal infusion. Easy despite being confined to a small area of Croatia from whence this
originated over 20 years ago. …
A new clone from Holland. Ballerina is a very lovely form with a white throat, rather than the normal
yellow. The exterior is shaded with a hint of dove grey. The overall appearance of the flower is pure,
simple and lovely in the extreme. Down in price this year.
This is one of the most beautiful of all Crocus . Pure white flowers with a central zone of intense blue-
indigo. There is no yellow in the throat, which adds tremendous visual impact, combined with the white
styles. Rare. Good drainage, in a sunny, loam soil in sun
We have a new stock which originated with D. Husum. Small and slender, deep purple flowers, early in
the spring, with darker tips to the petals. This is a truly lovely plant, the Italian representative of the
C. vernus complex. Moist garden soil, needs little attention.
This has deep orange flowers with a polished deep-bronze basal zone running up the tube, and continuing
as fine stripes on the polished exterior. This has been difficult to obtain but this new seed-raised stock is
both vigorous and cheaper.
Masses of vivid, deep golden yellow flowers on short stout tubes along with the very short, broad and
quite decorative leaves (for a Crocus !), in February. A tough plant for outside in the open garden but
increasingly scarce, this is true material.
Superb mineral violet-purple flowers with a lovely golden throat are borne with the narrow wiry leaves.
Floriferous, adaptable and one of the best of the miniature species for the garden, as it stands the weather
so very well. Price reduced this year after a good crop.
Although known for many years before this, C. rujanensis was finally described by Randjelovic in 1989.
A relative of C. sieberi , flowering in spring, with flowers that are mid to deep purple inside, but with a
cream to buff exterior, lined and feathered in purple. Vigorous and attractive, a new offering. Native to
the border regions of Albania and FYR Macedonia.
A robust pure white form, with just a hint of purple pin-prick dotting on the outside. Doubly unusual in
frequently having eight petals instead of the usual six.
This is purple inside, silver-grey outside with a strongly contrasting deep purple tip. Striking and
attractive..
