1. The Messenger of the LORD and the Messenger of the Covenant.

Malachi 3:1-4

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD,

whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye

delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like

a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:

And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge

them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old,

and as in former years.

2. The Day of the LORD.

Malachi 4:1

For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do

wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts,

that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

3. The Sun of Righteousness.

Mal.4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his

wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

4. The Coming of Elijah.

Mal.4:5-6

Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the

LORD:

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their

fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

Malachi speaks if the coming of John and Jesus in the context of the Old Covenant. John’s

appearance would be sign that the Day of the LORD was at hand.

The coming day of the LORD would be a day if wrath for Israel’s covenant violations. The

LORD would come to judge and heal. Those who believed would be healed and the rest

judged. Elijah was John, who came to call Israel to repentance and prepare the way of the

LORD. This was all a part of Israel’s salvation and restoration (healing).

The result would be an offering of righteousness in Judah and Jerusalem. The sons if Levi

would be purified. There were many priests who were obedient to the faith. Malachi’s

prophecy was a rebuke to the corrupt priesthood of his day, and he saw the day when thy

would be purified through Messiah.

Acts 6:7

And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly;

and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
