Math 2: Statistics Project.

Aim of the project: The aim of the project is for you to demonstrate a thorough

knowledge and understanding of all the concepts covered in the Statistics unit. A list of

the main concepts addressed is given below.

Statistics Objectives:

Students should be able to:

Classify data as categorical, numerical discrete or numerical continuous

Recognize the difference between a census and a sample

Recognize when a sample give a biased representation of the population

Construct frequency charts, column graphs and dot plots

Describe the distribution of the data set

Identify possible outliers

Construct stem and leaf plots

Construct frequency histograms

Find mean, median and mode from lists of data and from frequency charts

Construct a cumulative frequency graph

Construct box and whisker plots and parallel box plots

Use GDC or computer software to find statistics

Compare two sets of data

Instructions: You are to gather data on a topic of your choice and then will use this data

to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the objectives listed above. How

you decide to present your findings and the general structure of your project is up to

you. You may choose to produce a project individually or with ONE partner of your

choice, but I will be expecting projects produced by pairs to be of a higher quality than

individually produced projects. You will be required to compare data sets and make

conclusions based upon your comparisons, so you will need to collect at least two

individual sets of data that will allow you to do this. Submission deadline will be START

of lesson on May 9th. Late submission will be penalized. The scoring rubric for this

project is given overleaf. Read the rubric carefully.
