That simple idea — let’s get kids reading — was what got us
into children’s publishing in 1975. It’s still our focus today.
We look for manuscripts and authors that will reach out
to kids who aren’t big readers. We want to grab their
attention with books that connect to the things they care
about. We want them to discover the fun in reading about
kids like themselves. We want them to read about kids living
in communities just like theirs.
We know that there are lots of great children’s books out
there — including a lot of wonderful books by Canadian
writers, something that wasn’t the case back in 1975. Our
mission is to find and publish those special books that will
connect with kids who don’t yet know a lot about the joys of
reading.
In this catalogue we present the books in our ongoing
series. They’re aimed at readers from 6 to 15. As you’ll see,
there’s a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Some of our
books are tagged as hi-lo titles — check out the
SideStreets series, for instance. It’s aimed at readers who
are 12-14, with reading levels of grades 3-5. Many of our
books — 149 of the 482 different titles in this catalogue —
have received prestigious awards from the Canadian Children’s
Book Centre and other groups.
There’s something more about our books that is important
to us, and we expect it’s important to you too. It is best
captured in a response to our author Lorna Shultz Nicholson
when Wayne Gretzky read one of her books in our Sports
Stories series. “Lorna’s books are a great read for kids and their
parents,” wrote Wayne. “They really help teach the
importance of having good values both in hockey and in life.”
