“Once in a Blue Moon: An Artist’s Life” by Marie Elyse St. George Published by Coteau Books Review by Karen Lawson ISBN 1-55050-338-3 Everyone has a life story to share, but Marie Elyse St. George offers much more to her readers than just her memoirs. Her biography “Once in a Blue Moon: An Artist’s Life” is full of her bold and imaginative paintings as well as many examples of her creative poetry. The author’s artistic gifts include being both a talented author and a unique painter. Her story captures the essence of who Marie Elyse St. George is and what influences and factors helped to shape her. The author shares her memories of her childhood growing up in southern Ontario during the Depression. She then takes her readers to England and discusses her experiences as an art student. After returning to Canada she marries and her life takes another turn as she moves to New Hampshire . In 1973, she and her young family settle in Saskatoon. In this prairie environment, she becomes an integral part of a group of emerging artists who support and challenge each other. She credits the strong art community in Saskatoon in giving her the confidence to evolve as a recognized and respected artist. Her artwork is both simplistic and complex. There is a dreamlike and surreal quality to her paintings that is layered in detail and depth. Her poetry is likewise full of imagery and provides an ideal complement to her art. This book is a wonderful read for those interested in art, poetry or who just enjoy reading a fascinating account of a life well lived. “Once in a Blue Moon: An Artist’s Life” was nominated in the non-fiction category at the 2006 Saskatchewan Book Awards. “THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE OR VISIT WWW.SKBOOKS.COM
