He was named “Canadian of the Year” by Macleans in 2003 and one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time (2005) Brian Mulroney Memoirs The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993, has had a fascinating career. Born in 1939 into a mill worker’s family in an isolated Quebec town, he grew up bilingual. As the first in his family to go to university, at St. Francis Xavier and Laval Law School, he took on responsibility for the family on his father’s death. He became a successful lawyer in Montreal, specializing in labour law and coming to prominence as a Conservative Member of Parliament and eventually Prime Minister of Canada. This is a must-read for anyone interested in Canadian History. Lewis H. Lapham Theatre of War Lewis H. Lapham influenced more than a generation of readers as editor of Harper’s Magazine from 1976-2006. He is an inductee into the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame. A noted author, he is the founder of a publication about history and literature entitled Lapham’s Quarterly, and the author of numerous books on politics and current events. His writing has often appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, among other publications. Lapham studied history at Yale and Cambridge University. Vanity Fair has suggested Lewis Lapham bears resemblance to Mark Twain, and Tom Wolfe compared him to Montaigne. Find out for yourself! Roger Martin The Opposable Mind: How Successful Leaders Win Through Integrative Thinking Roger Martin has served as Dean of the Rotman School of Management since 1998. His writing can also be found in seven Harvard Business Review articles and numerous columns and books. In 2007, he was named a Business Week “B-School All-Star” for being one of the 10 most influential business professors in the world. Business Week also named him one of seven “Innovation Gurus” in 2005. His research work is in Integrative Thinking, Business Design, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Country Competitiveness. Roger holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. Richard Florida Who’s Your City? Something of a departure from his more macro-level work, Florida’s latest book, Who’s Your City, is a personal look at why our choice of location may be critical to our success and happiness. Since this best-selling book was published in March 2008, American author Richard Florida has moved to Toronto. Does the book’s subtitle, How the Creative Economy is Making the Place Where You Live the Most Important Decision of Your Life, explain his relocation? A widely published provocative thinker, Florida is currently a professor of Business and Creativity at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, on the heels of a 20-year academic career at Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Florida is the founder of the Creative Class Group, a global think tank based in Washington, DC. Margaret Atwood Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth Margaret Atwood is one of Canada’s major contemporary authors. A poet, critic, feminist and social campaigner, she is among the most-honoured authors of fiction in recent history. Her multiple nominations – and wins – include the Booker Prize and the Governor General’s Award. Margaret studied at University of Toronto and Radcliffe College, Harvard. Dr. James Orbinski An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action in the 21st Century Dr. Orbinski is a Canadian physician, award-winning author and humanitarian activist. An Imperfect Offering is a deeply personal and political book, recounting Orbinski’s experiences at the helm of Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders during the Rwandan genocide. In 1998, Orbinski received the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Cross for his work in Rwanda. In 1999, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize as International President of Médecins San Frontières. He recently won the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for political writing. James Orbinski is the co-founder and Chair of the Board of Directors of Dignitas International, a medical humanitarian organization for those suffering from HIV/AIDS. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Fellow at the Munk Centre for International Studies. Dr. Roberta Bondar Passionate Vision – Discovering Canada’s National Parks Roberta Bondar was inspired by the views of Earth afforded by the Space Shuttle as Canada’s first female astronaut orbited our planet in 1992. An accomplished photographer, she has taken her camera to capture the natural beauty of 41 national parks located in all regions of Canada.
