Teaching Literary Elements with Picture Books

Objectives: ~ To introduce methods and ideas for transferring writing skills and literary devices from literature to student writing. ~ Examine contemporary picture books and a variety of genres to see how they support writing techniques and literary elements ~ Create a lesson to introduce a literary device using a picture book Enduring Understandings: ~ In order to read critically and interpretively, and to "write with stylistic awareness" (Hall, 2002, p.vii), students need to understand, interpret, and apply their knowledge of literary devices. ~Picture books offer an invigorating way to teach literary devices to promote student reading and writing. ~The writing we get out of our students can only be as good as the classroom literature that surrounds and sustains it. ~To become better writers and to incorporate literary devices naturally and seamlessly into writing,. students need to be exposed to quality language and rich vocabulary.
