So, you got the password-- that's great, congrats. Now let me tell a little about myself.
As I said in the post above, my name is Hazel Knott. I'm an eighteen-year-old college student helping run
a boarding house and safehouse in the middle of nowhere. My magic is focused mostly in battle-related
skills, both offensive and defensive, so I'm not the most useful around the place. I man the front desk
and phone, as well as the finances. And customer relations. And making sure our boarders haven't up
and died. If you want the explanation behind my choice of battle magic, drop me a line and I'll tell you
my sob story.
Oh, and our boarders-- actually, we've only got two permanent boarders right now. Because I might get
skint if I give out their names, I'll call them Plus One and Deus.
Plus One works as a magician, bit of a pretty boy. Nineteen as of June 2003, twenty come September. A
smartass. I'm fairly certain he'd take anything to bed once, but I'm not testing that theory. He's got this
split personality, multiple consciences thing going one. Kind of like an evil twin, only this twin's nicer and
they share a body. Technically, then, he'd be Plus One and... Magic Mirror.
Deus is... well, Deus is our deus ex machina. If there's something that can't be fixed any other way, we
can call him. That is, if he's around. He's a bookworm, a nut for strange artifacts and things like that.
He's always traveling, trying to find something new to add to his collection. The attic room has
practically turned into a museum... But really, we don't know very much about him. He just showed up
one day, rented out the attic and made it his home base.
And then there's the staff. There's more staff than boarders, but we all live in the house. I live here, of
course, but three others do, too.
Bit is my cousin, seventeen, the only girl in an immediate family of eight men. She acts... a lot like a guy,
almost like she doesn't believe she's female. It took us ages to get her to wear a shirt while she's doing
repairs. But she's a hard worker, amazingly resourceful and a whiz with anything mechanical. It's actually
her realm, mechanics, she can repair almost anything. She's maintenance.
Auntie is the owner and namesake of the boarding house, somewhere upwards of sixty years old. She's
also the cook and half of the cleaning crew. She's not actually related to me, but she's been a friend of
the family for years. When I dropped out, she hired me to help out, and I've been here for two years
now. Made her life a lot easier-- mine, too. She's supposed to have been quite the firebrand in her
younger days, and she still hasn't lost all of her spark.
Tarot is Auntie's old friend, the laundry lady, and the other half of our cleaning crew. Her magic gives her
the "Sight," allowing her to see... well, a lot. Sometimes she states some strange limiting factor to her
sight, but I don't know whether she actually can't see what she's looking for or if she just doesn't want
to share. She's a sweet woman, though, as old as Auntie. They supposedly made a promise years ago
that they'd die on the same day.
We've got plenty of space for more boarders, but we're in a location that's just... ridiculous. Way out of
town, end of a long road, all kinds of limiting factors. But I guess I like it this way-- we break even
financially, at least. Somehow. Plus, sometimes we attract trouble that doesn't belong in town, and
having all this space is useful in times like that.
Oh-- the trouble. Yeah, that's why I started this blog. The house is practically on top of a vein of magical
energy, strongest in the region, and someone needs to protect it from people who want to control all
the energy flowing through it. And that? That's why Auntie bought the house. She made some changes,
of course, used some of the energy to link the house to unneeded space around the state and expand
the interior, gave it a basement, stabilized it... overall, the house is a marvel! And yet we still can't get to
water temperature to regulate itself and the lights still have the habit of blinking on and off sometimes.
Anyway, that's me, that's why I'm writing this blog. I can't guarantee regular updates, but I'll still be
here. Shoot me an email if you have anything to say.
