UCWLincs Welcome to our first issue This newsletter is long overdue, and finally triggered by requests from student and alumni representatives on the Academic Council. Accordingly, they are profiled in this first issue. Our Librarian Sandra Lee has agreed to serve as Editor, and so we are also profiling her. We hope to provide LINCS on a monthly basis, and hope you will provide us with news etc. that you think will be of interest to UCW students, faculty and staff. – President David Strong UNIVERSITY CANADA WEST’S M O N T H LY NEWSLETTER ISSUE 1 2008 this issue UCW’s Olympic bid P.2 Profiles P.3 UCW apparel, web links P.4 From left: UCW’s VP Marketing and Recruiting Wes Koczka, Kaplan’s Asia-Pacific President Mark Coggins and Canadian High Commissioner in Singapore, Alan Virtue. Singapore swings The UCW/Kaplan Asia Pacific Management Institute full-time MBA program in Singapore was launched May 5th in the Fairmont Hotel, overlooking the famous Raffles Hotel. Robert Rogerson, VP Academic and Wes Kozcka, VP Marketing and Recruiting were in attendance. This is the first of several initiatives to spread the reach of UCW programs internationally through collaboration with successful established institutions abroad. More than 50 people attended including Alan Virtue, the Canadian High Commissioner to Singapore, Mark Coggins, President Asia Pacific of Kaplan, and several business and education leaders in Singapore. At the opening, Dr Rogerson expressed his delight in working with Kaplan APMI, noting the high standards of professionalism, academic integrity and the student support evident at their City campus. He also thanked Roland Ng of Kaplan APMI and UCW colleague Dr Koczka who were instrumental in bringing the partnership to fruition. Mr Coggins noted how Singapore’s knowledgebased economy is well served by the new alliance. It further contributes to the Singapore government’s goal to position the city-state as the major education centre in Southeast Asia. Alan Virtue expressed his pride in Canadian education and his confidence that UCW will represent Canadian standards abroad. As the executives rose to a champagne toast, Dr Koczka announced that UCW has initiated scholarships for at least two MBA students. The award will allow MBA students registered in Singapore to attend one term in Canada and students in Canada can reciprocally attend one term of their MBA in Singapore. Through this kind of exchange we hope to build strong links between our separate geographical entities. Be Remarkable TRAVEL Reports from UCW recruiters at work around the globe International recruitment has been a priority for UCW in recent months. Many students from all corners of the world are drawn to UCW, not only for its FinishFaster program, but also for the extensive language support offered to international students. This program will open the students’ eyes to the world of broadcasting, the scope of the communication industry and to the broader goals and spirit of the Olympic Games. Full recruiting from among our Media and Communications majors, Business, and other students will begin in September 2008. Further information may be obtained at that time from Michel Janisse, Dean of Arts and Science. Positions may include: • Archivist/Librarian • Audio Assistant • Business Assistant • Camera Assistant • Commentary Systems Operator • Liaison Officer • Logger • Utility • Logistics Assistant STUDENT CENTRE UPGRADES Over the coming months the student centre will undergo a significant transformation. With the help of our own design students we hope to provide students with a casual atmosphere where they can hangout or study. We look forward to getting the project underway. Volunteers will be needed for easy tasks.
