              Linking TMS and FTMIS

    General observations (air/rail/water):
     Different information needs:
 Rail: tracking and tracing information, ETA
 Water: weather (tidal times, waves), security (other
         vessels)
 Air: only info from freight to traffic
     Rail:
 track vs. train operating companies --> complexity
 info available but …. not distributed
 Water: VTMIS, AIS transponders, RIS
 Air: Need for better ETA’s of trucks (trucking)
8
        Focus: road freight transport

    • Longer Find the 7
    • Heavier differences….
    • More km/year
    • More expensive
    • More automation/ICT
    • Subject to driving bans
    • Have customers

                    Road
Nevertheless, with respect to traffic information:
 A truck is considered as ‘just another car’
 No specific traffic information for freight
  transport
 No dedicated service providers

  This must be changed!

                         Road
     3 types of traffic information:

      Historical information
 statistics per road segment (hour/day/season)

      Information on planned events
 road works, special events, time windows

 Information on unplanned events (real time)
        weather, incidents, unusual congestion

     • Daily planning
     • Route choice and redirection
     • Customer service
     • Long term capacity planning

14
                  Observations

 Linking TMS and FTMIS still in its infancy
 TMS not specifically dedicated to freight
       transport
 User requirements not yet well known
      Organisational and contractual
       agreements between the actors required
 TMS and FTMIS: two different worlds
 THEMIS: to bridge the gap(s)
